In this blog, Hazel writes about her new book Bringing Your Heart to Work: A Seven-Step Journey to Mental Health and Wellbeing published in the Psychotherapy Matters book series. 

 

The book is based on my experience working as a mental health specialist locally and globally. In it, I share my personal experience of burnout and witnessing burnout among my colleagues and clients. At a time when so many are weighed down by overwork, overwhelm and overthinking, Bringing your Heart to Work offers a proven framework to reclaim your clarity, purpose and wellbeing. 

My initial idea, 20 years ago, was to write my life story as a legacy to my daughters. This gradually evolved into a different book addressing stress and burnout among healthcare professionals.  

After 25 years working in the mental health sector, I found myself feeling lost and depleted. Yet within that difficult chapter of my life, I uncovered a deeper truth: that many of my colleagues and clients, particularly successful, high-achieving women, were also disconnected from their true passions and overwhelmed by the relentless demands of their careers and life’s expectations. Recognising the familiar patterns of stress, identity loss and burnout in myself as a student and lone parent with a full-time career and others, led me to develop practical strategies.

My hope is that you will find this book a life-affirming guide to help you reconnect with your purpose, learn to work in alignment with your values and choose a healthier approach to success.

Drawing on decades of experience as a mental health clinician and coach, I created a transformative seven-step method designed to spark lasting change. This approach acknowledges that the path to success can be challenging, but following the steps I set out in my book can lead to a profound reconnection with your authentic self, awakening your passions and empowering you to move forward with renewed energy, clarity and confidence.

My main focus in the book is on stress, burnout, and loss of purpose – all of which are common issues many of us face. Therefore, the tools developed in my book can be applicable in the therapy, coaching, supervision and consultancy space and are for anyone going through a life transformation. 

The book is unique because I adopt a stance of vulnerability by sharing my personal story, which most therapists shy away from. It’s also written in a conversational and relational style and moves away from traditional psychotherapy books so that anyone reading it could relate to the language. This model has been tested with various groups, including entrepreneurs, the corporate sector, creatives, psychotherapists and social workers, as well as in education and the third sector. I have had very positive outcomes. 

The main message in my book proposes that when you are not working or living in alignment with your values, you experience a sense of disconnect and general decline in your wellbeing. It can also negatively impact your relationships, making it harder to feel genuine and connect with others. Ultimately, a lack of alignment can lead to burnout, job dissatisfaction and a struggle to find meaning in your work. This book also gives you a snapshot of some of the inner processes that a psychotherapist or coach goes through, as well as those of our clients in a typical session.
