My Approach

My main theoretical approach is as a Gestalt psychotherapists. I am interested in how we form specific patterns of relating, to both ourselves and others and the impact these have on our current life experiences.
I work with each individual's whole life experience to help them make sense of their presenting issues, develop a wider range of resources and expand their options for dealing with future life events.
I aim to use interventions that relate specifically to the individual, thereby adopting an integrative approach to my work. I have also had experience of utilising Cognitive Behavioural techniques especially in relation to substance misuse and over the years have gathered a range of knowledge that I now tailor to the individual needs of people I work with.

About Me

I have over twenty years of clinical experience and have worked within organisations that specialise in resolving complex trauma and addiction issues as well as being self employed in private practice. I recently migrated to Australia from the UK. Over the years I have worked with individuals, couples groups and families although my private practice is largely centred around individuals needing short or long term work.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have learned over the years that people experiencing distress/discomfort look for ways to help them "feel better". Often when people become addicted/dependent on a particular method of finding some respite, the actual result is that they "feel less distressed" while their focus is shifted. This promotes the idea that the addiction helps them to feel better. Ultimately the feelings come back and the cycle is recreated. Sadly some of the consequences in resorting to addictive behaviours can be devastating for both the individual and those around them. I am very interested in how we form our patterns of behaviour and the ability of human beings to re shape their lives.
The way we relate to both ourselves and others has always been an interest of mine. How we learn to get our needs met from birth often becomes a style of relating that continues into adulthood. As children we have limited resources to get our needs met and as we grow our limitations can present us with problems.
Trauma affects us all differently and is often the basis of much of the work I do. Trauma encapsulates a huge range of issues and while it is possible to live with our experiences of trauma, for many people the trauma prevents them from living a life they would like to live.
