My Approach

My approach to my work is to treat you like a friend within very strict boundaries. So I will offer you a timed slot in a confidential room where you can expect me to listen empathically to whatever you want to say without judgement or advice. There are limits to that of course because I will have to report certain criminal activities and serioius threats of harm to yourself or others.

We can make a plan for your goals together or explore hitherto uncharted territory. My aim is to enable you to accept yourself and the limitations on your life whilst making any changes that would facilitate that.

I do not expect you to be my friend so I will not disclose much personal information, and you do not need to worry about how I am.

I am qualified as an Existential Psychotherapist and have been practising as such for 14 years, and before that was a general counsellor.
I have learned much theory along the way and may think about it while we talk but you may not notice me speaking about it unless you are interested. However, I enjoy working with student therapists and can offer a reduced rate for long term work. There are many new techniques available as we learn just how many people have suffered from various forms of trauma during their lives and I try to keep up with the latest theories, particularly in neuroscience.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

As an existential therapist I know that anxiety is universal and unavoidable. However, it is possible to manage the ups and downs of life with as much tolerance and resilience as we can muster. The background of our world has been completely shaken so when personal anxieties are added it can be almost impossible to feel anything other than overwhelmed. I know from my own experience is that talking really does help and I can offer you a safe space to speak out whatever you feel too awkward or worried about to say elsewhere.
I have worked closely with colleagues in the area of gender identity for more than a decade and am aware of the controversial nature of this topic in the political world at the moment. I will give you all the space you need to explore how you feel about gender without attempting to shape your decisions. Language in this area is constantly evolving as well as scientific knowledge to support experience, so I can only offer you my undivided attention and my ability to help you find answers to your questions for yourself
We exist in relationship whether we like it or not so this area is key to discovering how to live more fulfilling lives. Patterns from childhood or present situations can make it difficult to manage as best we can in what is becoming an increasingly crazy world. From enjoying hugging a tree to a deep connection with a lover examining how we are with others can be an exciting process.
I firmly believe that anyone who has fallen into sexual offending is worthy of treating with dignity and respect. It is my experience that if someone is willing to examine their lives they will begin to understand how they came to behave as they did, and consequently find a way to move forward without posing a risk to themselves or others. It may feel like a difficult task but together we can give it a go.
i began my counselling career many years ago when I lived in Knoxville, Tennessee where I worked for the Rape Crisis Centre. I learned that rape is not about sex but about power and fortunately since then society has a much greater understanding of this. However, there is still too much suffering occurring and I have specialised in working with the resulting trauma since my days in the USA.
