My Approach

My work aims to integrate: the influence of our early experiences; the importance of looking at what is in the present; and the capacity to open to the future and the unknown.

About Me

I am a therapist, supervisor and trainer, and have been working in private practice since 1999. Before I trained as a therapist, I had a background in theatre-in-education and community health. I am an author, and have lectured on and contributed to a number of journals on the link between the creative/expressive arts and therapy.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

As well as seeing many survivors of abuse in my private practice, I worked for seven years as a therapist and trainer for Survivors UK, which is a London based charity that supports men who have experienced sexual violation. I am the author of the book, "Helping Male Survivors of Sexual Violation to Recover" (JKP Books 2018).
Loss, whether that is of significant people, or animals, or homes or jobs, is one of the most painful human experiences, that we all need compassion and support to be able to come through. I have many years of experience in offering the understanding and support that people who are coping with loss find so helpful.
Anxiety and depression are two of the most common causes that lead people to therapy, and the feedback I have received from clients over the years is that they have been significantly helped to deal with both, through their work with me.
Many people feel they either struggle to form intimate relationships, or feel unable to sustain such relationships. This is an area that therapy can effectively address, as the problem is often related to how an individual feels about themselves. Exploring the beliefs about ourselves that we tend to carry from childhood, and which can go deeply unconscious, is an effective way to bring about changes in how we relate to others in our intimate relationships.
Feeling that life has lost deep meaning, or a sense that there could/should be more than material success and earning money is a common source of pain for many. My approach holds open the possibility of allowing a spiritual perspective to life that is not overly religious, but is, instead, respectful of the mystery, the sublime and that which connects all living beings across times and cultures, and which restores a sense of meaning, value, and feeling deeply connected.
