My Approach

There are many reasons why people come to therapy: you might be looking for understanding of yourself and the world; you might be wanting to change; you might be wanting to improve your relationships or manage your emotions better. Whatever the reason you will find that I am interested in you – what you think, how you feel, what life is like for you; I provide a space that is warm, welcoming and without expectation or judgment. It is your space for you to bring whatever issue you wish to explore, whatever difficulty you are unable to resolve. I will listen to you and together we can start to make sense of why you have the experiences and difficulties you have, how exactly you respond to situations, why you developed these responses, the importance of them and whether these responses are helpful to you now. I will work at the pace and in the way that feels right for you.

I work with a broad range of clients from varied backgrounds and with a wide range of issues: you may have a name for your difficulty such as anxiety, stress, depression, trauma or maybe you are just aware of challenges that you are struggling to manage: within your relationships, within the work place within your family or within yourself.

What you can expect from therapy with me:
• Whilst therapy can sometimes be difficult, you will undoubtedly be exploring painful feelings and taking the courage to think about the parts of yourself that you mostly hide away, there will also be times when it is joyous and affirming and we will laugh together; there will be times when it will be creative, fun and hopeful.
• The therapy session is just a small portion of time carved out of your week – it will be important for me to help you find the best way to support yourself as you go about your daily life throughout the rest of your week
• We all learn in different ways; together we will explore the methods that are most effective for you to help you sustain/hold onto your insights and ideas once you have left the therapy room
• I am particularly interested in how the relationships in your life affect you; it will therefore be of interest to me to find out from you how the relationship between us feels to you. If you are able to do so I would like you to be able to talk about your feelings and reactions to me as a helpful way of learning about your feelings and reactions to other people in your life

Professional qualifications and training

In addition to an MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy I am fully trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) therapy for the processing of traumatic memories. I am also an accredited practitioner in Interpersonal Psychotherapy, a therapy that targets the impact and significance of relationships on depression.

Specialised work

In the early part of my career I trained and worked as a lawyer. I use that experience in my work with legal professionals as a director and therapist at Lawsight, an organisation which has been set up to provide counselling and mental health support to lawyers. (see www.lawsight.co.uk)
