My Approach

My approach is collaborative, supportive and embraces you as an individual with your very personal life story and way of being.

I will provide the space for you to express how you are feeling and what has happened to you in the past, or is happening to you now. Together, we will explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviours, memories and beliefs regarding the issue that brings you to therapy at a pace determined by you. We will discuss how you would like this to change and how I can support you in this. We will work towards reducing the negative emotional impact your experience has on you, identifying changes you want to make in your life to improve the quality of your life, and building resilience for the future.

I offer a relationship in which you can learn about yourself and the way you relate to others so that you can reflect on underlying beliefs about people and relationships, and make changes towards more fulfilling relationships.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have been providing bereavement support, clinical supervision to bereavement supporters, and training in bereavement care for a national charity for over 10 years. I understand the devastating effect a loss can have on individuals and families. The impact can be physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual. You may feel lonely, hopeless, angry, depressed, frightened, guilty and much more. You may have lost the motivation to do anything including taking care of yourself. Your loss might be directly or indirectly related to Covid and you may have lost the opportunity to say good-bye to your loved on, be there when they died and give them the funeral they deserved. You may be more isolated in your grief due to lock-down measures. I will offer you the opportunity to talk about how you are feeling and explore how you can begin to built a life without your loved one.
I have a particular interest in working with men, women and couples who have experienced trauma at any stage of their lives. This includes one off traumas such as accidents, attacks or witnessing violence, as well as long term traumas such as domestic violence and childhood neglect and abuse, including sexual abuse. I understand that difficulty trusting, shame and feeling judged can make it difficult to seek help. Sometimes clients are frightened that they have to tell the therapist what has happened to them as this would feel too overwhelming. Please be reassured that you will not be pressured into telling something you don't want to. Working with how your experience is impacting on your life and relationships now can make a big difference without revisiting what happend. Some clients do want to tell what has happened to them. In this case I will help you tell your story safely using recognised trauma techniques. Due to the experience you have had you may have a diagnosis of complex PTSD, borderline personality disorder, dissociative identity disorder, attachment disorder or others. I have extensive experience in working with survivors of sexual abuse both in private practice and in a rape crisis centre.
