My Approach

My therapeutic approach is firmly based around the ethical practices of UKCP. Here, engaging with clients to achieve their best outcomes, ensuring a safe, non-judgemental and confidential space to talk, think and listen together, and maintaining a respectful regard at all times are some of the core principles guiding my approach.

About Me

I completed a four-year core training in psychodynamic psychotherapy in 2006 and a further post qualifying year specialising in the treatment of traumatic experiences. Since then, I have worked in diverse settings including the NHS and voluntary sectors, and in private practice. My training and much of my clinical practice was previously London-based, but in 2017 I relocated back to Cumbria where I offer counselling to clients in person - specifically in Kendal or Kirkby Lonsdale - and online, both nationally and internationally. My work is focused on individuals over the age of 17 years and tailored to their presenting needs. I offer an initial assessment session without charge.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Many of my clients have shared the enduring and chronic impact of early physical, emotional and sexual abuse on their adult lives, including a diminished sense of 'self', surges of anger and unconstrained hopelessness, dysfunctional relationships, and experiencing repetitive setbacks.
Building therapeutic relations with individuals given up for adoption at a young age - often in circumstances of institutional and family-based secrecy - has been a remarkable personal journey. Professionally speaking, it has provided me with considerable insight and understanding of this complex and, invariably, life challenging experience.
Over recent years, I have found myself increasingly working with clients fulfilling the role of 'unpaid carer' to a family member. Though not exclusively of 'senior citizen' age, most have the bulk of their lives now behind them and in the present (and future) moments are facing unprecedented changes to their lives triggered by the failing health of 'loved ones', resulting in profound shifts in interpersonal relations, day to day responsibilities, psychological health and the quality of life.
I believe 'bereavement' is an integral condition of life and, in my experience, most individuals, families and groups are able to navigate through this time of readjustment, notwithstanding coming to terms with the often painful circumstances and realities of the person who has died. In my counselling practice, however, I do encounter other, more, complex realties of losing someone, where it can be difficult for clients to let go of (the individual concerned), to move on (despite the impact that might be having on their current lives) or encountering difficulties in dealing with residual and unresolved feelings that can't be laid to rest. Bereavement also brings to mind the pervasive experience of 'loss' which is often a key detail of many of my clients' personal stories: the loss of good health; or a job or business opportunity; a dear pet or close friendship; or a happy childhood; etc.
My work as a psychotherapist has brought me into contact, extensively, with clients carrying the psychological wounds of traumatic episodes and experiences: from the survivors of state sponsored torture; to the seemingly innocent victims of accidents or physical violence; and the fallout from bullying, harassment or discrimination-triggered attacks.
