About Me

I work as a chartered psychologist, counsellor, psychotherapist, supervisor, researcher, writer, and professional trainer within private practice, local government and at the University of Manchester. I have trained in person centred counselling, acceptance commitment therapy (ACT / CBT) and depth psychotherapy (TA training as a Transactional Analyst with Psychotherapy speciality - UKATA / UKCP registered), and honorary lecturer at the University of Manchester.

With over twenty years experience working within the helping profession, including ten years experience of personal development in groups and training throughout Europe and Asia, my areas of expertise include difficulties in adult relationships, complex bereavement, phobias, psychological issues relating to fertility, and working with groups. I am currently writing a book on the growing phenomena of Internet addiction, including pornography, social networking, and gaming addictions.

Prior to working as a psychotherapist and trainer I have worked in the funeral sector, education, social work & social service management. Increasingly so, I find myself being invited to offer consultancy and professional psychological commentary for television and radio programs. This latter, unexpected twist in my career particularly excites me at the moment as I am keen to promote the ethical and professional application of psychology within the media (particularly news and topical / ethical debate programs).

I would describe myself as compassionate, dynamic and grounded. I hold a firm belief that every person is individual, and has the potential to fully realise their unique qualities. Academically speaking, my approach is pluralistic - relational, psychodynamic, existential, and cognitive behavioural - and underpinned by humanistic values. In ordinary terms, I adapt my approach to meet the needs of my client, and hold the firm believe that a key part (tool) of the growth process is the actual relationship with whom I'm working.

QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

I'm a fully qualified psychotherapist I have a masters degree (with 'Distinction') in TA psychotherapy, a BSc. (with 'Honours') degree in psychology, and am a certified transactional analyst (CTA). Prior to becoming a UKCP registered psychotherapist I also undertook a three years training as a person-centred counsellor. I have also completed a professional doctorate at University of Manchester, and dual professional status as a Chartered Counselling Psychologist and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Counselling Psychologist.

As a psychologist I have studied and trained in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) applications at doctoral level. As a registered Acceptance Commitment Therapist (ACT) and professional member of the Association of Contextual Behaviorial Science (ACBS) I have published papers concerning my therapeutic work and how I implement 'mindfulness' into my practice.
