My Approach

Alongside a systemic approach, I draw from person-centred, narrative, CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), solution focused therapy and coaching approaches. I have a special interest in understanding the relationships and the systems in which we live.

About Me

I have more than 20 years experience in working with a wide range of issues and in particular, working in hospices, supporting people who have been diagnosed with a serious illness, their family members/carers and those bereaved. I am an accredited UKCP systemic therapist, a BACP accredited psychotherapist, and a trained supervisor (Cascade).

I work with

  • Couples
  • Individuals
  • Private healthcare referrals

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

When someone we care about dies it can be one of the hardest challenges we have to face. How we react to grief varies greatly, for some it can feel completely overwhelming, sad and distressing and for others, they may feel little or no obvious grief. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Therapy can provide a confidential, safe space and time to express your feelings towards loss and explore ways of making life more bearable and managing complicated, perhaps even unresolved, or conflicting feelings of grief. Bereavement counselling can be useful in helping us to understand that we are not 'going mad' and that, although life will never be the same again, there may be a way in which enjoyment may be experienced in life once more.
I offer a safe space to talk about feelings and thoughts; for some, just one session may be helpful to explore a particular dilemma, diagnosis or worry, others may prefer to have longer term therapy. I have extensive experience in helping people who been diagnosed with a serious illness and those caring for someone who has been diagnosed with a life limiting illness. I can provide support through diagnosis, treatment and end of life care, including for example, helping people to explore unresolved issues, write letters to loved ones and capture precious memories
Living with a serious illness can be extremely challenging, worrying and sad. Having a confidential, safe space to process these feelings and talk things through can be invaluable at such a crucial time in ones life. I have supported people diagnosed with serious illness, including cancer and neurological health-related issues. Facing ones mortality and thoughts of death and dying can be a lonely and worrying experience however, talking these thoughts and feelings through can make a difference. Being diagnosed with a serious illness and in a place of remission or recovery can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Therapy can offer you a place to help find 'you' again when everything is actually different.
Online counselling/therapy can be an incredibly useful and practical way of having therapy. If anyone had ever asked me prior to Covid19 whether I would entertain online therapy, I would have imagined that therapy might be compromised if it was not in person. However, during covid I engaged with numerous people (patients, carers, bereaved) online and on the telephone and I have truly had a complete change of mindset. Patients appreciated engaging in therapy from the comfort of their homes. Carers reported finding it more practical to engage online (so they did not need to leave the person they were caring for) and my experience of emotional connection was just as significant through video and telephone as it has been face to face. I offer zoom and telephone sessions of 60 minutes, on Tuesdays and Wednesday including Tuesday evenings.
Taking a systemic approach helps us to focus on relationships between individuals and groups of people rather than a focus on individual thoughts and feelings. Change can often be achieved through exploring relationship patterns and understanding how these patterns are playing out. I have a special interest in working with adults and couples providing an empathic supportive, non-judgmental place where we can explore your reasons for coming to therapy. I am supportive, respectful and genuine and believe in creating a safe and supportive space where you can feel you can be yourself.
