My Approach

I offer weekly and twice weekly therapy, combining clinical knowledge with a down to earth and straightforward approach. My work is trauma-informed and I am able to help with a wide array of issues that are difficult to tackle alone.
There are many reasons why people decide to come to therapy. You might be feeling overwhelmed and anxious or stuck and frustrated and you’d like to get clearer about what it is that is bothering you. Or, perhaps, you know what you want to explore and you’d like some help to address those thoughts, feelings and behaviours that you find challenging.
There is something both supportive and practical about taking some time each week to sift through the complexity of your life, and come to understand yourself more fully. What therapy provides is a space to be really heard, with the kind of attention that is deeper and more focused than that available in everyday conversations.
I hold the belief that therapy is not about seeking perfection, but is, rather, a process towards acceptance of the whole self. To this end you are invited to explore the influence of your past, the realities of your present and the significance of those aspects of life that exist beyond the everyday and purely rational, such as the realm of the imagination and connection with the natural world.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Life Transitions We are creatures of habit and we can struggle with change. But it happens anyway. Life unfolds as a succession of changes and how we cope with these can have a big impact on how we feel about ourselves and our lives. Counselling for life transitions can help you explore your thoughts and feelings about the changes you are anticipating and it can help you to make sense of, and come to terms with, unexpected and perhaps unwelcome change. Examples of life transitions include: leaving home, beginning or ending a new job, moving location, starting or ending a relationship, becoming a parent or grandparent, mid-life uncertainty, promotion at work or redundancy, empty nest, ill-health, retirement, the death of a loved one. Another aspect of coping with change is when we feel stuck and see our friends and family moving forwards in their lives. I offer a warm, welcoming and confidential space where you are invited to explore your hopes and regrets, your feelings of self worth, and your sense of the meaning of your life.
Lots of people experience anxiety at certain times in their lives. Worry and stress are appropriate responses to challenging circumstances such as illness, bereavement, redundancy or relationship problems. Furthermore, a certain amount of anxiety in response to a situation like a job interview or an exam might even be beneficial for a short period of time. However, when worries build up and fail to subside, anxiety can start to have a serious impact on your physical and mental wellbeing. Physical symptoms of anxiety include tension and tightness in your body, shallow breathing and a faster heart beat. Anxiety also gives rise to obsessive thinking, a sense of insecurity and sometimes overwhelming fearfulness. I am experienced in helping people to overcome their anxiety. I offers a safe and non-judgemental space in which together we become more aware of the unconscious thinking patterns that fuel your anxiety. With greater awareness it becomes possible to reconnect with an inner calmness.
Humans are hardwired for sociability and yet so many of us find relationships difficult. We start learning how to relate to others from the moment we are born and our early life experiences establish a template for how we interact with others. You might struggle with beginning, maintaining or ending relationships, whether these be professional relationships, friendships, or intimate relationships and you would like to explore, understand and ultimately improve the way in which you relate to others. Because relationship problems are central to much of what we struggle with in life, I offer a relational approach to therapy, informed by theories of attachment. This means I will invite you to use the relationship we build in the therapy room to help you to explore your patterns of relating to other people in your life, outside of therapy.
