My Approach

Helping people to heal and grow towards their potential and freedom is a real privilege. I know from my own long journey, together with helping many others, that healing and development are possible, it is our deepest wish.

It is the unbearable hurt, loss, distress or fear (often from childhood) that caused us to become wounded, fearful, closed-down, over or under active, suffering from some combination of anxiety, depression, compulsiveness or relationship difficulties. With this we are trapped in a ‘victim’ place with its complicated defensive structures, where we are constantly trying to maintain the avoidance of what was unbearable. This is the nature of trauma, which I think we all suffer from to some extent, no one has a perfect upbringing and life.

Our journey towards freedom always has to start with our wish to find a better way of living, this is the start of us taking responsibility for ourselves. Then there is the work of self-awareness and self-understanding. This is where therapy comes in, it supports a new looking and seeing and understanding through both support and challenge. Awareness itself is an enormously powerful change agent because we have within us a deep wisdom that wants to heal and grow, it does so through seeing what is true, and what is not.

Taking responsibility for ourselves always starts with looking, with inquiry, then as we slowly face what was unbearable, as we understand and integrate and repair the splits within ourselves, we slowly heal. We are part of Life, part of the unfolding of Consciousness through our awareness, part of Love through the opening of our hearts, part of the energy of Life through our bodies. With these three fundamental parts of ourselves connected into a whole, which is greater than the sum of the parts, we can increasingly find ourselves and embody our freedom. As Rumi put it, “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself you have built against it.”
