My Approach

As an Integrative Counsellor, I aim to be professional, ethical and reflective and to bring myself and my personal values and beliefs about life and human development into my practice. I believe that relationship is central to human happiness and in my practice nothing is more important than creating and maintaining a relationship with my client, based on understanding, compassion and non-judgement. It is my experience that by knowing who we are in the context of our lives, and by learning better how to meet our needs in the here-and-now, we can start to feel differently about ourselves in a way that creates the conditions for change and healing.

About Me

I aspire to co-create a warm, open and collaborative experience that promotes self-enquiry and offers practice in self-regulation. I may invite you to experiment with mindfulness, visualisation, breathing and other techniques, as appropriate, in order to support you during and between sessions. I also offer opportunities for psycho-education and for working creatively to enable you to reframe self-critical thinking and reconnect with the essential aliveness and joy in the moment, which I believe is our birthright.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety and depression are often signs that our nervous systems feel unsafe and I work with strategies to help clients notice what is happening in their minds and bodies so that they can better handle everyday stressors. Often this also involves exploring how and why they learned to feel anxious and what has changed, so that they can now learn to relax more easily.
I have a background of working on employment-assisted programmes, where I have helped my clients to explore the reasons they may be experiencing issues at work and how they can manage these more effectively, if that is what they ultimately wish to do.
I often work to explore family dynamics and help people to decide what it is useful to them to let go and what they wish to heal. I encourage them to develop ways to find compassion for their younger selves, and this in itself is frequently healing for them and for their wider relationships.
Relationships are the essence of being human. We are all primed to seek contact with others, while remaining emotionally sensitive. If we have experienced a sense of not feeling safe, heard, cherished or of belonging, it is hard to trust in our current or new relationships and we will have wonderful protective strategies in place that have helped us to survive in the past but prevent us from thriving in the present. I work with clients to help them develop new ways of being with themselves and others in a way that can create positive changes in their relationships.
I am interested and experience in working with the effects of trauma, including sexual and physical abluse, as they intrude in the here-and-now, in way that aims to keep my clients safe from retraumatisation and able to link and differentiate past and present. This can lead them to a re-evaluation of their own role in the past and what they need now to heal and live life fully again.
