The type of therapy I practice is Person-Centred and experiential psychotherapy. This is based on the work of Carl Rogers who believed it is inherent within all of us to grow and expand what it means to be us, to evolve to be the best version of ourselves possible, but that this natural tendency can be thwarted in adverse conditions. As challenging as this may sound he also provided much research which demonstrated that given the right conditions we are able to make the changes we seek. I am not a classically-orientated Person-Centred psychotherapist, I work very much with the experiential side of my training. The analogy I like to use is that of looking at a map; you tell me the direction you would like to go and I offer you different ways of getting there. I won't tell you which direction to go in, that's your choice, but I will help you navigate the path you choose.
Hello, my name is Claire Maskery (she/her)
COVID-19; Caring for our mental wellbeing is as essential as caring for our physical health - especially in times of crisis. This new paradigm has forced us all to look at new ways of working and I am pleased to say my clients and I are having really positive virtual sessions. This has the benefit that clients, previously excluded due to logistics, can now access my service - from all over the UK. Feel free to message me if you would like to discuss whether this would be right for you. I wish you all well and hope you are able to care for yourselves and loved ones.
I work with people who endured challenging events in childhood such as physical, emotional, verbal and sexual abuse, boarding school survivors and adoptees. People who experienced hurt or trauma when growing-up can find these events cast long shadows, impacting relationships, work and happiness in the present. I am a Person-Centred and experiential psychotherapist. This means I will not tell you what to do, but will support you to find your own way forwards finding a newer, easier way of living with your past.
I support people who survived developmental trauma, whose formative experiences cannot be put into words because the happened when they were so young. Not having clear memories does not mean what they endured did not have an impact. When an infant does not have their needs met, or has them met in unhealthy ways, the neonate finds alternative ways to survive. Survive, they do - but at a cost. This cost can involve not being able to connect with people, always feeling like one doesn't 'fit' in the world, of wanting connection but not knowing how to get it in healthy ways.
Sometimes early experiences have helped an Adult Baby (AB) side evolve. I help men and women who identify as ABs move away from binge / purge cycles, I help them find a healthier way to manage any guilt and shame they may have and make peace with their little side. Of course this is not the case for all ABs; if you identify as an AB and you are in peace with this side of yourself - go you!
