My Approach

I am an individual, couple and family psychotherapist. By googling David Secrett you will see my website and my approaches are described there.

About Me

People often come to therapy wanting to resolve a deep pain, untangle a complicated problem or find someone to talk to about a stuck situation. This might have personal and family and network resonances. I am interested in hearing from you about what you need help with and I can offer methods and strategies which we can discuss and use to plan some solutions. I have found a range of ideas and techniques may be really helpful and I would want to negotiate with you what you want and offer you some professional guidance as well as a lot of time for me to listen to you.
I have found psychodynamic, systemic and behavioural methods very helpful as well as suggestions which are based in years of experience of providing help.
I am a white man with a family. I have many ethnic differences, gender identity differences and class differences in my family.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

It is not easy to seek help for problems that arise in our relationship with the significant other person in our life. It may however be important in order to change habits and to improve the quality of everyday life. It may be that you don't feel safe, that you want to achieve more in your relationship or that you are wanting to challenge some of the patterns you have got into. It is only about 1 in 10 couples who have problems that actually seek therapy. If you have problems with cynicism, stonewalling, regular criticism or lack of trust then it could be worth seeking couple therapy. I can help with all these areas and I am experienced in working with a whole range of different couples including straight, queer, gay, black, ethnic minority and older people.
The networks of relationships we create could be through romance, friendship or tradition as well as through birth childhood, youth and partnership/marriage. Family relationships may be long lasting and intense and frequently this is what people bring to therapy. I am expert in working with patterns over time. I am interested in hearing your views of which relationships are important and which ones you want to be important.
I believe that our inner world - our thoughts, feelings and predjudices in the different parts of who we are interrelate with each other. Our external relationships help to locate us in our social world. We frequently want to maintain stability and repeat patterns. This can helps and also provide obstacles for us.
