My Approach

'When it hurts we return to the banks of certain rivers" - Czeslaw Milosz

As a systemic psychotherapist, my approach fits with the idea that no man is an island; our identities evolve in response to our relationships with others. I can help you to explore the patterns that are causing distress in your life, individually, as a couple, and as a family. We can think about the impact on you of your past and present relationships, as well as what you may be contributing, often unintentionally, to the difficulties in your life.

Patterns may be internal and emotional, such as becoming overwhelmed with anger or sadness; or relational, such as avoiding intimacy or becoming preoccupied by others' needs. I believe that these patterns have developed over many years for good reasons, they are adaptations that try to help us cope with life's circumstances, and should be treated with respect and thoughtfulness. However, together, we can also challenge these patterns of being and relating, and experiment with visiting the banks of other rivers in thought, feeling, and action.

I have experience working with both adults and young people and can offer individual treatment to either age group.

About Me

I am a highly specialist systemic and family psychotherapist with 8+ years of experience supporting adults and young people with mental health difficulties in the NHS, and public and third sectors.

I am especially interested in working with people who have had negative experiences of therapy previously and who may have mixed feelings about trying to get help again. Sometimes it can be hard to tell if this resistance is coming from the therapist not being the right fit, from our own internal resistance, or some combination of the two. I offer space to think about this at the outset of any work, as well as exploring candidly if I am the right therapist for you.

I have extensive experience working with trauma, including multiple forms of childhood abuse and neglect, as well as traumas that may be more subtle and difficult to define.

In my practice, I am a flexible therapist, exploring exactly what it is that you need from a therapeutic relationship to realise your hopes and goals for treatment.

I work online and face to face in my consulting room in Sydenham Hill / Dulwich. Please feel free to explore my webiste, www.thedulwichfamilyconsultationservice.com

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I work with adults and young people who are feeling depressed or have a diagnosis. Often people who I work with who have felt depressed for a long time have tried other kinds of therapy, for example CBT, and found this to have been of limited help. A more in depth approach to psychotherapy can help you to consider what might be getting in the way. I understand that the difficulties that lead to depression are complex and that therapy can be off-putting when it feels simplistic or reductive. Working together, we can find ways to be emotionally and intellectually honest about what is and isn't helpful for you and what needs to happen to bring about change.
As a systemic and family psychotherapist, I have specialist training in helping people with the dynamics of their relationships. Our relationships have the power to bring meaning to our lives, and to make them utterly miserable. It makes sense to invest time and effort in unpicking what is working or not in our relationships to help us to live satisfying lives. Often families and individuals working with me find it helpful to think about their communication and how they can improve in this area.
I have extensive experience working with traumatised individuals and families, both adults and young people. Traumatic experiences can become frozen in our minds and feel impossible to move past. In therapy, I offer support to make sense of what happened and to process it.
