My Approach

There are many different approaches to psychotherapy and counselling. I will focus on developing an open, trusting relationship with you, as the therapeutic relationship is the most important vehicle for change. At the heart of my practice is a commitment to provide you with a safe, confidential, non-judgemental space in which we can explore the issues most important to you. I work collaboratively and adapt how I work to be most effective for the problems you bring. This aligns with the latest research on how psychotherapy and counselling work most effectively.

The approach to therapy that I offer, Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), can help with most psychological issues you may bring. If I can’t help you, then I will usually be able to recommend someone who probably can.

About Me

I have experience working with a diverse range of issues, including depression, anxiety, relationships, self-esteem, abuse (sexual, physical and emotional), trauma, grief, loss, work/career issues, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, sexual issues, gender and identity, bullying, self-harm, suicidal feelings, and isolation. This list is not exhaustive, and I am willing and can usually work with whatever is troubling you. As well as running a private practice, I have experience working within a local counselling charity in Hampshire and a counselling service in Dorset.

I am particularly interested in attachment processes, the way we form emotional bonds with others. Attachment theory suggests that the types of relationships that our caregivers provide for us during our early years can set the stage for how we relate to others throughout our adult lives. Our attachment styles, formed in childhood, although often largely unconscious, can sometimes become an obstacle to experiencing fulfilling, sustainable relationships with others in the present.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety itself is a natural response to the perception of being under threat. It is often referred to as a 'fight or flight' response. This response has survived the process of evolution and natural selection because the ability to accurately evaluate threats to our survival has been a handy way for humans to keep themselves alive in all sorts of dangerous environments. In our modern world, this very well-established response to threats is still very much active in us, despite there being far fewer actual threats to our bodily survival on average.
We first begin learning how to 'do' relationships through our interactions with our parents, guardians, and caregivers in our early lives. Our attitudes towards others, the way we make sense of how other people behave towards us, how we believe others perceive us, and the unwritten, unspoken 'rules of engagement' when we are socially interacting with others as adults have all been formed during our earliest experiences in the relationships of our childhood.
The World Health Organisation estimates that approximately 3.6% of the world's population has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In a recent study of 21 countries, over 10% of those who responded had experienced some form of a traumatic event, including exposure to war, witnessing or experiencing interpersonal violence, accidents, or trauma to a loved one. In addition, PTSD may develop following neglect or abuse (sexual, emotional, or physical) either in early life or more recently.
