If you have difficulties with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, childhood abuse or difficulties, trauma or PTSD, work stress or bereavement I am an experienced Psychotherapist and Counsellor working in Cornwall and Birmingham and I have much experience of working with most issues.
Are you looking for someone to talk to, or someone to help you through difficult times? Are you struggling with anxiety, panic or depression? Do you have relationship difficulties? Have you been bereaved or suffered a loss? Do you have low self-esteem, experience of trauma, childhood abuse or work stress? I am experienced in working across the range of problems from problems caused by current life events such as redundancy or divorce to more severe mental health problems such as chronic depression and personality problems.
I offer a safe confidential place for you to talk and explore what is troubling you. I work with the belief that you know how to support yourself and how to solve your own problems, but sometimes you may get stuck in an unhelpful pattern and need someone else to help you to get out of it. Sometimes this may need a cognitive approach, sometimes a creative one, it depends on you.
I offer long term and short term therapy and personal development work. I enjoy working creatively and am able to support you when you are vulnerable and to challenge you when you are stuck.

How do I work with you?
I work with you to help you to resolve or cope better with difficulties in your life. You have the chance to talk confidentially in a safe and sympathetic environment. This can help you to become aware of and deal with issues that have been bothering you. It can help you make decisions about your life so you can decide how you want to move forward. It can help you become more aware of the skills and resources you already have.
I offer the time and space for you to become aware of and explore difficult life or childhood events that may have been causing you distress and discomfort. These may be sexual abuse, physical or emotional abuse, deaths and bereavements or other traumatic events such as experiencing illness or disability, or being bullied, that can make later life difficult. I work to help you discover how thoughts, beliefs, patterns of behaviour, and ways of coping developed in your past can cause pain and distress in the present. I work with you to help you change and let go of those things that you no longer find useful. I aim to help you become more aware of what is useful and what 'works' for you and to help you recognise and use the strengths and ways of coping that you already have.
You can use psychotherapy to explore and learn how to deal better with relationships. These may be with your family, your partner, your children, at work or with your friends or others. I aim to help you understand and learn how to communicate better and how to stand up for yourself. This can improve your relationships and make you feel more comfortable in them.
We will normally arrange weekly sessions.
‘How many sessions will I need?’
This will depend on the issues that you want to bring. I am experienced in working both short term (4-8 sessions) as well as long term (for months or years). At our first session I will talk with you about the issues you want to bring, what you want from coming and we can agree an initial timescale.

Short term work
Short term work can be helpful if you want to bring single or recent issues such as stress and anxiety and depression or life events like bereavement, redundancy or coping with illness. It can also be helpful for longer term problems as these can sometimes be helped with a few sessions or you can use sessions to learn how to cope better with ongoing problems. I will discuss with you at the first session if short term work may be helpful to you.

Long term work
Long term work is useful for longer term or deeper problems. It may be that you have never really felt happy and at ease. Long term work aims to help you understand why this should be and how to move on from this.
Long term work may also be needed to help you resolve longstanding depression or anxiety, difficult childhood issues or other deeper problems. It can also be useful if you suffer with a more severe mental illness or personality problem such as eating problems, addictions or chronic depression.

At our initial session I will discuss with you what may be useful for the issues you want to bring. I aim to work with you in the way that most suits you and the difficulties you bring rather than trying to fit you into one way of working. Because I am trained in more than one therapy I have a range of skills to do this.

LOOKING FOR A SUPERVISOR IN CORNWALL OR BIRMINGHAM? PLEASE SEE MY SUPERVISION PROFILE BELOW:

I offer supervision to Psychotherapists, Counsellors, student Psychotherapists and Counsellors and people using therapeutic skills, such as nurses, support workers, probation officers etc.

I work with individuals and groups and am a BACP senior accredited supervisor of groups.

My approach to Supervision
I believe that the purpose of Supervision is to protect the best interest of the client and that the best way to do this is to support the Supervisee.
I believe that Supervision should provide a safe environment for the Supervisee where they can feel supported, listened to and understood. It is essential that the therapist feels able to discuss 'mistakes' and misattunements as well as triumphs and successes with the Supervisor. I aim to help Supervisees find their own way of working while helping them to develop and hold a safe 'therapeutic frame' that contains the client.

I work with Supervisees to fit their practice to the context in which they are working whether this be Private Practice, Voluntary Organisations, the NHS or for private firms. I have experience of working as a Psychotherapist in all of these types of organisations. I understand how where you work affects how you practice.

I work with Supervisees to create a safe and boundaried way of working as I believe that secure boundaries offer the possibility of free and creative work for client and therapist.

I am interested and experienced in helping Supervisees build and maintain a private Counselling or Psychotherapy practice and work to help them promote good business practice.I understand the pressures and constraints of both self- employment and working for an employer.
