About Me

Statement about COVID-19:
The pandemic increased our need to look after our physical and mental health. Many feel more isolated as a result. If you are finding life difficult and are confined to your home, I can work with you online or by telephone.
- Andrew

Hello, I'm Andrew and I'm an integrative psychotherapist. What do I mean by integrative? Well, over the past 40 years it has been reliably shown that there is no overall 'best therapy'. What works for one person does not necessarily work for another, even if their issues are similar. One of the safest ways of knowing how successful therapy will be is the kind of relationship that forms between you and your therapist.

A RELATIONAL INTEGRATION
You might have heard about psychoanalysis, person-centred counselling, CBT, Gestalt therapy, or mindfulness. These are just a few of a number of therapeutic approaches. Each type of therapy offers different potentials for change. For over forty years now there has been a steady movement towards integrating these various approaches to better meet a person's particular needs.

What underpins this integration is the kind of relationship that forms between a person and their therapist, often referred to as the ‘therapeutic relationship’.

I integrate evidenced ways of working from neuroscience, psychology, counselling, and psychotherapy. How I’m informed by this integration is led by what you need in therapy and the kind of 'therapeutic relationship' that forms between us. This means that the way I work will be specific to you and your particular needs.
WHAT TO EXPECT WITH ME I provide a confidential space for us to meet and explore the things that are causing you distress. Our meetings occur at the same time every week either for an agreed period, or on an open-ended basis.
During our sessions, I work with you to create an environment in which you can be open and curious about your difficulties so you can reflect on them from a fresh perspective. I ask about your thoughts, feelings and sensations to gain a deeper appreciation of what you are going through and reflect back aspects of your life as I experience them with you. To facilitate this, I stay open to your experience in a non-judgmental way.
I also pay attention to how your present situation is influenced by your past, and notice how the past might be shaping your current relationships, including how we relate to each other during therapy sessions.
Seeing how you are in the ‘here and now’ as well as the ‘there and then’ is a useful way of working out 'where and when' to change.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I work with adult survivors of childhood physical and sexual trauma and abuse. I understand how difficult it can be to break a lifetime of silence. I also know that slowly giving voice to these experiences in a confidential space can help tame the chaos.
I have worked with people who are gender, sexually and relationally diverse since 2008, specialising in issues to do with: drug and alcohol dependency; body image; and relationship issues.
I work with people who have dementia and memory problems, and their carers and family members. I work with a framework of post-traumatic growth for people who have received a recent dementia diagnosis.
I work with a framework of post-traumatic growth for people who have experienced, or are reexperiencing trauma.
