Statement about COVID-19:
These are unprecedented times. There is an increased need to protect physical health in ways that can affect mental health. The impact of social distancing and self-isolation can be distressing. If you are finding life difficult and are confined to your home, I can work with you online or by telephone.
Hello, I'm Andrew and I'm an integrative psychotherapist. What do I mean by integrative? Well, it has been reliably shown that there is no overall 'best therapy'. What works for one person does not necessarily work for another, even if their issues are similar. One of the safest ways of knowing how successful therapy will be is the kind of relationship that forms between you and your therapist.
A RELATIONAL INTEGRATION
You might have heard about psychoanalysis, person-centred counselling, CBT, Gestalt therapy, or mindfulness. These are just a few of a number of therapeutic approaches. Each type of therapy offers different potentials for change. For over forty years now there has been a steady movement towards integrating these various approaches to better meet a person's particular needs.
What underpins this integration is the kind of relationship that forms between a person and their therapist, often referred to as the ‘therapeutic relationship’.
I integrate evidenced ways of working from neuroscience, psychology, counselling, and psychotherapy. How I’m informed by this integration is led by what you need in therapy and the kind of 'therapeutic relationship' that forms between us. This means that the way I work will be specific to you and your particular needs.
WHAT TO EXPECT WITH ME I provide a confidential space for us to meet and explore the things that are causing you distress. Our meetings occur at the same time every week either for an agreed period, or on an open-ended basis.
During our sessions, I work with you to create an environment in which you can be open and curious about your difficulties so you can reflect on them from a fresh perspective. I ask about your thoughts, feelings and sensations to gain a deeper appreciation of what you are going through and reflect back aspects of your life as I experience them with you. To facilitate this, I stay open to your experience in a non-judgmental way.
I also pay attention to how your present situation is influenced by your past, and notice how the past might be shaping your current relationships, including how we relate to each other during the sessions.
Seeing how you are in the ‘here and now’ as well as the ‘there and then’ is a useful way of working out 'where and when' to change.
