Body psychotherapy is an approach to therapy that recognises the interconnectedness of mind and body, and how life experiences, emotions, and feelings are held not only psychologically but physically. Our life stories shape our bodies, often creating patterns in how we think, speak, and behave. As every body is unique, body psychotherapy is a different process for each individual.
Sessions may include a combination of talking therapy, breathwork, biodynamic massage, guided meditation, movement exploration, or the use of art materials for expression. I work with whatever is emerging for the client, offering a safe, confidential, and supportive space.
My name is Tom Maxwell, and I am a body psychotherapist based between Brighton & Hove and Bedford. I trained in Body Psychotherapy and Biodynamic Massage Therapy at the Cambridge Body Psychotherapy Centre (CBPC) and am an accredited member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).
Before retraining as a body psychotherapist, I spent over a decade working as a support worker for the YMCA. This was a challenging and deeply rewarding role that provided a strong foundation for my therapeutic work. My connection to body-based practice began through a lifelong involvement in martial arts, which later expanded into yoga, various forms of massage, and movement practices, ultimately leading me to body psychotherapy.
