My Approach

My work is informed by attachment theory. I believe that relationship is at the heart of what it is to be human. In it we can feel a profound sense of connection, love, and support, in knowing that we 'matter'. In it we might also have experienced pain, and been deeply hurt. I am interested in exploring the learnt patterns of relating which have arisen from your relational experiences, and which form your unique relational road map.

Some of these ways of being will most definitely serve you well. Equally, there might be others which have become stuck in protective, or responsive patterns of relating which cause you distress and work against what you long for.

As a relational therapist I believe the most profound change occurs in experience, most powerfully in relational experiences. There is healing in voicing our thoughts and feelings; being seen and understood; finding permission that allows for the multiplicity of our experiences and the complexity of our feelings. Speaking our truth to another lets our experience live and be truly known.

To love and live fully as ourselves requires our commitment and service. I will guide you to find a loyalty to knowing yourself deeply. Always with tenderness, we will start the process of noticing a wider set of choices. In this you will find the possibility for empowerment, and learn ways of stepping into a more fulfilling version of your life, with increased confidence, spontaneity and hope.

About Me

I am an experienced integrative therapist, qualified to work with a wide range of issues. Over the years I have worked in statutory and charitable organisations, as well as in my private practice. I offer in person and online sessions, for both short and long term work.

I know how difficult it can feel searching online profiles trying to know if I might be the right therapist for you. Your reasons for seeking therapy will be as unique as you, and here I am trying to say something which might offer a flavour of how I work, so you might also understand what makes me uniquely me as a therapist.

Over the years of my experience I have come to trust these first steps, there might be a wish list, thoughts and hopes of what being in therapy might be like, often driven by the distress that started the whole process rolling. I will listen deeply, and with tenderness. Everything is welcome, nothing is too messy. Importantly for me the process is a collaborative one, I will not be offering solutions, instead we will be in there, together, trying to make sense of your experiences. I will always be in your corner, and however broken you might feel, I will always hold a sense of you as whole until you are ready to know that for yourself.

Beautifully, time after time, I witness the work transforming the initial wish list into change beyond that which we even knew was wanted.

Please get in touch if this has left you curious.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

We all face existential challenges at different stages in our life. Whilst at times change can seem simple to navigate at others can we get stuck, or feel overwhelmed. We might find our current circumstances stir up past hurt and distress. We might feel a deep sense of loss and need to grieve. We might find ourselves unsure, with questions about the meaning of life. I offer a space to be curious about feelings arising from wide ranging life changes - through questioning career choices to retirement; the excitement of new relationships to divorce or relationship breakdown; adapting to becoming a parent or stepping into life once your children have ‘flown the nest’; the loss of a loved one; or the experience of ageing or illness.
Depression can serve to isolate us, making us feel alone, sapping energy levels. It can trigger feelings of self loathing and shame, in turn leading to low self worth, sometimes thoughts of suicide. I will work with you to manage your feelings, bringing consistency and compassion: holding the hope. We will explore the root causes and triggers for your depression, offering space for you to voice difficult feelings, and helping you to reconnect to your agency and lifeforce.
Connection to others is central to our sense of self and well being. However, sometimes our past experiences in relationship set unhelpful blueprints for our current relationships which may limit our capacity for intimacy. We might find it hard to show our feelings and express our emotions. We might get into patterns of pleasing the other, whilst suppressing our own needs. It might be difficult to ask for support. We might cling to relationships which, we know in our gut, are no good for us. I can work with you to understand your particular patterns in relationship, in both your work and personal life, helping you to find more assertive and fulfilling ways of being YOU in relationship.
Stress is widespread, interwoven into the very fabric of the way we live, especially in the fast paced work environments, and financial stresses of our capital. Stress can manifest in our bodies, perhaps in palpitations, lack of sleep, tearfulness, or in a general sense of anxiety or dread. It can become hard to maintain a healthy balance between work and home life; impacting our relationships, parenting and individual well being. I will work with you to understand your distress. Jointly we will identify ways in which you can tune into your own internal rhythms and guide you back to a place where you are able to live more in step with yourself, rather than simply responding to the demands of modern day living.
I offer therapy to trainee therapists, building a long term therapeutic relationship to support you through your training and the deep exploration necessary to enable you to bring yourself fully into your therapeutic seat.
