About Me

Whatever challenges or anxieties have led you to seek therapy, I believe in your innate potential for personal growth and healing. If you would like to talk about what is happening in your life, give words to your feelings and express those silent unspoken thoughts, I am here to offer support and provide a safe space for you to be yourself.

Hello and welcome. My name is Shyama and I am dedicated to providing a therapeutic space that is respectful and warm, where you feel truly valued and heard. My approach is integrative and specifically tailored to each individual, drawing on a range of psychological perspectives to support your unique journey towards well-being and growth. I offer both short and long-term therapy aligning with your needs but generally I aim to build long-term therapeutic relationships with clients, as it creates the foundation for deeper, more meaningful work.

As an Integrative Psychotherapist, I honour your uniqueness and recognise that one approach does not fit all. Therapy can help address and heal unresolved inner conflicts, offering a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of who we are and why we function the way we do. My integrative approach incorporates humanistic, relational, developmental and psychodynamic theory and practice to explore together your reality and experiences with compassion and without judgement. In practice, I am guided by your unique needs, working with you to create a therapeutic space that feels supportive and is effective. Together, we will explore how to best meet your goals, crafting a personalised framework that ensures you gain the most from each session.

Over the years, my clients have shared a diverse range of experiences and challenges, bringing with them a wealth of wisdom. Recurring themes include; depression, anxiety, shame, abuse, trauma, loneliness, low self-esteem, racial/cultural complexities, grief, relationship issues , living with neurodiversity and struggles within identity. These interconnected experiences and insights deeply shape my commitment to an intersectional and anti-oppressive approach.

I place emphasis on the therapeutic relationship, viewing our connection as a powerful catalyst for change. Through building trust, we can uncover and explore patterns and dynamics that may also manifest in other areas of your life. For example, examining one’s developmental history can shed light on early adaptations to life that, while once necessary, may now contribute to challenges in adulthood. Additionally, by bringing unconscious patterns into conscious awareness, you can increase your capacity to make more intentional, informed choices that better align with your current needs and goals. Exploring these dynamics within the therapy space provides an opportunity for you to practice new ways of relating and responding. This creates a safe environment for experimentation and growth, enabling clients to approach life and relationships differently outside of therapy. My hope is for you to be able to express yourself freely and be authentically you.

Navigating the world as a woman of colour has built up a plethora of personal lived experience, thus deepening my passion and curiosity around the experiences of marginalised individuals (race, ethnicity, sexuality). Our therapeutic space would fundamentally be to connect, foster insight and embrace the layers of your identity as a whole. I also have a personal and professional interest with people who live with chronic illness and how long term health issues can impact our psychological well-being. Living with RA has shaped my understanding and connection between the mind and body, recognising the profound connection between physical and emotional pain. Therapy would be a space to support both your physical and psychological health and the interplay between both aspects of your holistic growth.

Having experienced being a client myself, I understand the daunting process of reaching out for support and I am here to support you wherever you may be in your path to discovery and healing. Finding the right therapist is uniquely personal and I offer a complimentary 20 minute phone call where we can discuss any concerns or questions you may have, mutually discuss if you and I are able to work together therapeutically and some of goals you might have.

I believe therapy should widely accessible for all and if the fees feel difficult, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Working with clients on the autism spectrum has deepened my learning and understanding of how clients' may operate, process information and perceive the world and is an integral part of one's identity. In practice, therapy requires understanding, adaptability, and my commitment to creating a supportive, respectful, and individualised environment for each client. My approach focuses on understanding your unique needs, strengths, and challenges associated with people who identify as being on the autism spectrum.
Having a long term health condition can have a devastating impact on one's mental well-being. Having experienced this first hand and living with a health condition myself has greatened my compassion, understanding and impact of the mind-body connection and how isolating this might feel for individuals without the relevant support in place or a safe space to express freely the impact of; for example, physical pain and its impact on the individual as a whole. My goal would be to provide space for you to acknowledge and embrace your unique self, understand and heal through the loss/grief, gain further awareness of how physical issues can impact upon your overall well-being, and skills to support your self-care and feeling empowered.
My MSc research was focused on individuals of colour and their experiences of racial-cultural dynamics within training. This stemmed from my personal and professional interest as a woman of colour and relationship dynamics within myself and the world around me. Our work together through a safe, respectful and affirming space would support navigating your personal experiences and the emotional, psychological, and systemic challenges associated with your racial, ethnic, and cultural identity. This can be extended to all marginalised individuals and how one experiences the world and individual sense of self . Within our space, your identity would be honoured and respected; fostering insight, healing and acceptance of self.
This approach is rooted in the belief that our emotional well-being is deeply influenced by our connections and interactions with others and also the relationship with ourself. In practice, we might explore and examine patterns in your relationships and the co-created dynamics between self and another, help navigate conflict, communication issues or emotional disconnections in relationships. Furthermore, the therapeutic relationship between you and I would be an affirming safe space to explore and deepen curiosity around healthy/unhealthy patterns in relationship, what could be playing out from a historical narrative to the present "here-and-now" and support self care and personal boundaries within relationships.
Any experience big or small which has had profound impact on our wellbeing can be described as trauma. Understanding the varied ways trauma can manifest and affect a client’s life is essential. My goal is to create a safe and supportive space for us to work together at your pace to address the effects of trauma, uncovering the root causes of distress, gain clarity, make sense of your feelings while creating a safe and supportive space that promotes healing and resilience.
