My Approach

I meet my clients with curiosity and compassion and have developed a relational way of challenging clients when appropriate. I am interested in the what information the way in which we relate in the therapy room can tell us about how clients might be experiencing the world outside. I take a sensitive stance with my interest in intersectional identities and how they inform our power and positionality in the world.

About Me

I have been working with a wide range of clients from a variety of backgrounds for over 14 years. I have experience with eating disorders and body image issues, often co-existing with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, or childhood trauma. I am experienced in supporting clients through transitional periods in their lives with curiosity and a willingness to explore experience.

In my professional life before training to be a psychotherapist, I have led national leadership programmes in education and mental health, supporting individuals to become effective and successful leaders.

I have an enduring interest in the human experience. I completed my first degree in Psychology nearly thirty years ago, followed by an MSc in Occupational Psychology. While these two academic learning environments supported my work in leadership development, it was undertaking the MSc in Gestalt Psychotherapy at Metanoia Institute which brought me into contact with slowing down and noticing my process of relating and that of my clients.

The modality draws its influences from a diverse range of sources including psychology, Eastern spirituality, psychoanalysis and existential philosophy. I was drawn to Gestalt psychotherapy for the emphasis it places on being present in our lives in a relational and embodied way.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have seen anxiety manifest in many different ways, not only with clients. I enjoy working with clients to overcome the self-imposed barriers that anxiety can create when it becomes overwhelming. My focus is working together to understand how your thought processes, and experience of bodily sensation may be combining to sustain the limits created by 'anxiety' experiences.
I have spent a number of years working with the Coalition for Inclusion and Anti-Oppressive Practice, a cross-industry body created to acknowledge and address the inequalities in the experience of accessing mental health services and support, and in representation within the profession. This work has deepened my understanding of the subtlety and nuance in being curious about my own and clients' intersectional experiences within existing power structures.
Work can often be a place of conflict, we spend so much of our time at work that navigating relationships and power dynamics can impact our wellbeing. I have experience working with many clients at periods of their life when work is taking a disproportionate amount of energy. I can support you to develop skills to manage that navigation with less impact on your mental health.
I can support you to understand how you create and sustain intimate relationships with increased awareness of patterns you may be recreating. This awareness develops the possibility to make more choiceful decisions about how you can nurture intimate relationships that support your underlying needs.
I have worked with students on Gestalt training programmes and understand not only the logistical challenges of juggling developing as a practitioner with other commitments, but also the emotional challenges of developing your awareness of yourself-in-relationship with others and what you bring to each relationship.
