My Approach

My approach is to listen to what you bring - what your concerns are that bring you to therapy, how you relate to them and to the people and the situations in your life, your history and your background - and then to explore with you how you came to feel how you do, to try to disentangle some of the threads of your story so that they make more sense to you, and to look with you at who and how you want to be or could be going forwards.
Therapy is deeply personal and individual, and I believe that each therapy is unique, and a shared journey of discovery.

About Me

I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with over 25 years experience working in the NHS, the voluntary sector and private practice. I trained with Nafsiyat and UCL as an intercultural therapist, and I have always worked with a diverse range of men and women from different ethnicities, backgrounds, cultures, sexualities and perspectives. I aim to help you work out what's going on for you, within your own life and experience.
I have worked with people experiencing a wide range of issues in their lives: loss/questions of meaning; identity issues, including sexual identity; experience of trauma, including psychological/emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse; rape, including male rape; sexual identity issues, what you do, who you do it with; drug, gambling and other dependencies and addictions; mental health problems, including personality disorders and psychoses; and relationship problems. I offer weekly sessions, in perswon (Thursdays only) or online. My charges are fixed at the beginning of the therapy contract and remain fixed throughout the therapy.
I offer supervision for individual and trainee therapists; I currently supervise in the NHS and third sector. I also work with organisations on psychologically informed approaches to care and support on a consultancy basis.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have worked with both men and women who have experienced abuse as a child or as an adult, either directly or vicariously (for example through domestic abuse in the family); I have worked with both men and women who have experienced emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse, or who have experienced emotional and/or physical neglect. I understand the importance of you feeling safe in therapy and I am careful for the process to unfold in a way you feel ok with. I have worked with women who have been raped by men, and men who have been raped by men; I am a man and I recognise that most abuse is perpetrated by men against women, though I am aware that this is not always the case. I am very aware that it is difficult, perhaps especially for a woman, to work with a man when you have been abused by a man, but I think there can be benefits if you want to do so.
I trained as an intercultural therapist and I have always worked with people of different ethnicities, cultures, genders, religions and backgrounds to my own. I believe that much of the work of therapy is about cultural issues: between generations, between genders, between natives and non-natives in any particular country, and between personal feelings, desires and ambitions and predominat cultural values whether of the majority culture or a minority one, or a sub-culture. I offer an open exploratory space within which to explore your relationship(s) with your own and other cultures, families, societies, and the broader world.
I have worked with many people concerned about their identity, whether cultural, religious or sexual. My approach is to start with exploring your feelings, history, background, relationships and of course what you want and who you feel you want to be, and then to work with you to realise that - or those: I recognise that you may have or want to have many identities in different situations and that identity is not a fixed and immutable 'fact' but made up of a myriad personal psychological, emotional, geographical, historical, accidental and self-determined facets.
I have worked for over 20 years with people with a range of diagnoses of mental health problems including anxiety, major depression, psychosis and personality disorders. I explore with you what is of concern to you, and how you make sense of your own experience and work with you to get to a place where you are more comfortable with who and how you are, and who you want to be in the future.
I have worked with people who have expereinced one-off traumatic events such as rape or the sudden loss of someone close, and with people who have experienced trauma since childhood and beyond, in or through adolescence and adulthood. I understand the importance of you feeling safe in therapy and I am careful for the process to unfold in a way you feel ok with. I don't use special techniques; I work with you and what you bring to help you make sense of what's happened to you and/or what's been done to you, and of your feelings about it, and to find a way for you to be more comfortable with yourself.
