My Approach

I apply a range of strategies in a session and in order to support and encourage communication. This can include using the arts and art therapy, games and digital media. It very much depends on age and interests, and the needs of the child or young person. Much of my work and pace of the work is lead by the child or young person, and short and long term work is an important consideration. Three initial assessment sessions are completed before embarking on further sessions. I will also sign-post and make every effort to find more suitable pathways following assessment. I will complete written reviews and assessment information in support of a range of pathways, including an EHCP and SEND review.

About Me

I am an Educational Psychotherapist & Adolescent Counsellor, with a particular interest in young people and children who may be struggling to access learning. This may be long term concern or a recent change. I am a retired teacher of art and design, and was for many years a pastoral lead, so understand the complexities of education and how difficult it can be for a parent or young person to be heard. Much of my work has been in support of families navigating systems, applications and providing a link to services. I have trained and worked in a range of settings, including CAMHS, a specialist autism provision and directly in mainstream schools and within the home. Much of my work is directly in schools, but I also work one to one in a the home or suitable location, in support of young people who were not able to attend school. I may be contacted by a family, local authority or school to work face to face or on-line and often when other interventions have not been positive. I have facilitated and run a range of group workshops for young people 'at risk of exclusion'. Other workshops have included 'self belief and self esteem', 'girls and ADHD' and 'bereavement and the child'. In addition to my therapeutic work, I am a personal tutor for the Caspari Foundation and mentor trainee Educational Psychotherapists. I am UKCP registered, personally insured and hold enhanced DBS status. Any spare time I apply to my own practice as an artist, now that I have recently relocated to the Highlands.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I work with families and young people who are adopted. Sometimes early trauma will manifest a range of behaviours in the teenage years, especially approaching stressful assessments or exams. A part of my work I was able to support adolescents in long term local authority placement, and support them in their struggles to to think beyond and into the future. Adopted or in placement children and young people can be blocked by early experience and 'stuck', at times, leading to regressive behaviours, leading to families and carers reaching out for help.
Anxiety is a term that often begins the referral process, but it is a very broad but also can be a very specific need. I want to acknowledge that the initial referral 'term' is the beginning of the process and my approach is very much led and will focus on the information and experiences observed and discussed in the sessions.
I worked for a number of years and until my move to Scotland, in an autism provision from primary age to secondary children with a range of needs. Some children were non-verbal and had other complexities, including PDA, ADHD and OCD. By incorporating the arts, games and the visuals arts into sessions was an invaluable tool in support of communication and helped us to navigate their frustration for life and learning.
