Psychotherapy offers a space to think about aspects of ourselves and our relationships that can be difficult to understand alone. Rather than focusing only on symptoms or immediate difficulties, I am interested in becoming curious with you about recurring patterns, emotional experiences and the ways in which the past may continue to shape how you experience yourself and others in the present.
My approach is grounded in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and also draws on my wider clinical experience and training, including Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT). Depending on what brings you to therapy, our work may be exploratory and longer term, or we may agree on a more focused way of working.
Sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place once weekly, although we may agree to meet more or less frequently depending on your needs and the nature of our work. I currently work online using Microsoft Teams.
If you are considering psychotherapy with me, I offer an optional brief introductory call at no charge before arranging a full initial consultation. This gives us an opportunity to briefly discuss what you are looking for and whether arranging a consultation might be helpful.
I'm a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist based in South Devon, offering online psychotherapy to adults across the UK. I work with a wide range of emotional and relational difficulties, with particular interests in relationships, identity, sexuality, trauma and longstanding patterns that can be difficult to understand or change.
Before returning to independent practice, I worked for a number of years in specialist NHS mental health services, including as a Principal Psychotherapist and clinical lead. This included working with people experiencing complex and longstanding emotional difficulties, trauma, difficulties in relationships, self-harm and suicidality.
Alongside my wider psychotherapy practice, I have a particular interest and expertise in working with gay, bisexual and queer men. My doctoral and published research has explored suicidality and internalised homophobia, including the ways experiences of shame, sexuality and self-criticism can become connected with emotional distress.
My core training is in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and I am also a trained Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) Practitioner.
Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.
