My Approach

My approach is relational, compassionate, and collaborative. I believe that meaningful change develops through a trusting therapeutic relationship, where together we can explore difficult experiences, recognise strengths, and discover new ways of moving forward.

About Me

I am a UKCP-registered psychotherapist, Associate Professor in Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of Leeds, and Director of the Sagi Shalom Counselling Clinic. For more than 25 years, I have worked with adults, couples, children, and families.

My therapeutic approach is relational and integrative, drawing on psychodrama, attachment theory, humanistic psychotherapy, and contemporary relational thinking. I have a particular interest in working with trauma, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, obesity, ADHD, relationship difficulties, identity, and life transitions. Alongside psychotherapy, I provide clinical supervision and ADHD assessments.

Alongside my clinical work, I lead the professional training of counsellors and psychotherapists at the University of Leeds. I am passionate about supporting practitioners to develop not only their knowledge and skills but also their capacity to work with curiosity, compassion, and authenticity.

I believe that therapy is not about having all the answers, but about creating a relationship in which people feel safe enough to explore difficult experiences, make sense of their lives, and discover new possibilities. My aim is to offer a warm, thoughtful, and collaborative space where clients feel heard without judgement and supported to create meaningful and lasting change.

Alongside my clinical and academic roles, I remain committed to contributing to the wider psychotherapy profession through supervision, research, leadership, and the development of future generations of psychotherapists.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have a particular interest in working with neurodivergent clients, helping individuals understand how neurodivergence influences relationships, emotions, identity, and everyday life. Alongside assessment, I support clients to recognise their strengths, develop practical strategies, and build self-compassion as they navigate life beyond diagnosis.
I have extensive experience supporting people experiencing anxiety in its many forms, including generalised anxiety, social anxiety, health anxiety, and anxiety linked to life transitions, trauma, and relationships. Together, we explore not only ways of managing symptoms but also the underlying experiences and patterns that contribute to anxiety, helping clients develop greater confidence, resilience, and emotional wellbeing.
Eating disorders, obesity, and body image have been a central focus of both my clinical and academic career. I am particularly interested in helping people understand the emotional, relational, and developmental factors that shape their relationship with food, supporting recovery through curiosity, compassion, and collaborative therapeutic work.
I provide clinical supervision to counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists, and other helping professionals at different stages of their careers. My supervisory approach is collaborative and reflective, creating a supportive space where practitioners can deepen their clinical thinking, develop confidence, and maintain ethical, effective, and compassionate practice.
I have extensive experience working with people who have experienced trauma, including childhood adversity, relational trauma, and complex trauma. My approach is trauma-informed, recognising the impact that traumatic experiences can have on relationships, emotions, identity, and the body, while supporting clients to move towards greater safety, resilience, and self-understanding.
