My style is relational, which means we explore your life together. I don't silently observe you. Instead we talk and I respond and offer ways of considering your situations, which you may not have considered. I'm interested in discovering what your relationship is like with yourself, others and your world and what is holding you back or keeping you stuck from what you might like in your life, which might be a feeling or state of mind or larger life changes.
Are you seeking change in your life but don't know where to start? I can help you gain clarity and feel more certain and confident moving forward.
One of the areas of my work is the inner-child - We all need an inner child because it is the part of us that drive our joy, creativity, humour and curiosity. Most of us have the child in the driving seat of the car of our life. Whilst we know we are grown ups we feel small and vulnerable inside and our lives often feel overwhelming. We feel lost. Rather than getting the child to grow up we need to help it to feel safe and loved - being driven rather than driving. We need the neutral adult part of us to see how the child in us feels lost, neglected or abandoned. Through this awareness we can begin to recover our sense of confidence and joy. In our sessions I will coach you though a very easy and powerful exercise that will help you with this.
What recent clients have said;
“Neil’s helped me understand so much about myself, particularly how my family set up and past experiences have shaped the person I am and how I’ve been feeling about myself. He’s helped me challenge my own beliefs resulting in a transformation in my self-esteem. I’m the most confident version of myself to date and for the first time in my life I really like the person I am.” June 2024
“Therapy with Neil has helped me find some order during a very chaotic and difficult period in my life. Simply saying the words helped shine some light but the real benefit for me was putting structure to my thoughts and feelings. Being in an environment without an agenda and without judgment helped me better understand myself.” May 2021.
“Therapy has been transformative really. Working through the grief of losing family in the way that I did was essential for me to be able to move on. Also, learning to embrace being creative - it was almost the birth of a new life and I used this to work through these difficult issues. It was great to have you as a guide and confidant through these difficult times. It didn’t feel like therapy as I had been expecting as there were no definite answers or firm directions from you. Instead, the focus on creativity made everything much more tangible for me.” July 2023
I offer integrative Psychotherapy and have over 15 years experience working with; anxiety, depression, social anxiety, stress, relationships, low self-esteem, self-doubt, difficult family dynamics, sex and sexuality. I also specialise in inner child work as well as issues around difficult family dynamics, sibling issues, family narcissistic abuse and the effects of scapegoating and gaslighting.
I have an MA and an Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapy and before training as a therapist I worked as a commercial interior and exhibition designer. I freelanced with different agencies around London and on projects all over the world until I decided to retrain and follow a long term passion for inner work. This interest was heightened after a student exchange trip to Australia when I was studying design at Manchester Met back in the early 90s. By chance I attended a 10 day Vipassana meditation retreat in the blue mountains outside Sydney and this had a profound effect on my understanding of myself and my relationship with the world around me that has continued to develop.
My training was Integrative (different models) and Transpersonal (your true self beyond what you have learned about yourself). I'm also keen on the Existential ideas because they put you and your sense of the world at the heart of things. What purpose and meaning do you make of? Or maybe you feel you have lost purpose and meaning and this is what causes you anxiety. Similarly, what does freedom mean to you or do you feel trapped and stuck in the circumstances of life? How can we find freedom and meaning in the face of limitation and difficulty?
Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.
