My Approach

My style is relational, which means we explore your life together. I don't silently observe you. Instead we talk and I respond and offer ways of considering your situations, which you may not have considered. I'm interested in discovering what your relationship is like with yourself, others and your world and what is holding you back or keeping you stuck from what you might like in your life, which might be a feeling or state of mind or larger life changes.

Are you seeking change in your life but don't know where to start? I can help you gain clarity and feel more certain and confident moving forward.

One of the areas of my work is the inner-child - We all need an inner child because it is the part of us that drive our joy, creativity, humour and curiosity. Most of us have the child in the driving seat of the car of our life. Whilst we know we are grown ups we feel small and vulnerable inside and our lives often feel overwhelming. We feel lost. Rather than getting the child to grow up we need to help it to feel safe and loved - being driven rather than driving. We need the neutral adult part of us to see how the child in us feels lost, neglected or abandoned. Through this awareness we can begin to recover our sense of confidence and joy. In our sessions I will coach you though a very easy and powerful exercise that will help you with this.

What recent clients have said;

“Neil’s helped me understand so much about myself, particularly how my family set up and past experiences have shaped the person I am and how I’ve been feeling about myself. He’s helped me challenge my own beliefs resulting in a transformation in my self-esteem. I’m the most confident version of myself to date and for the first time in my life I really like the person I am.” June 2024

“Therapy with Neil has helped me find some order during a very chaotic and difficult period in my life. Simply saying the words helped shine some light but the real benefit for me was putting structure to my thoughts and feelings. Being in an environment without an agenda and without judgment helped me better understand myself.” May 2021.

“Therapy has been transformative really. Working through the grief of losing family in the way that I did was essential for me to be able to move on. Also, learning to embrace being creative - it was almost the birth of a new life and I used this to work through these difficult issues. It was great to have you as a guide and confidant through these difficult times. It didn’t feel like therapy as I had been expecting as there were no definite answers or firm directions from you. Instead, the focus on creativity made everything much more tangible for me.” July 2023

About Me

I offer integrative Psychotherapy and have over 15 years experience working with; anxiety, depression, social anxiety, stress, relationships, low self-esteem, self-doubt, difficult family dynamics, sex and sexuality. I also specialise in inner child work as well as issues around difficult family dynamics, sibling issues, family narcissistic abuse and the effects of scapegoating and gaslighting.

I have an MA and an Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapy and before training as a therapist I worked as a commercial interior and exhibition designer. I freelanced with different agencies around London and on projects all over the world until I decided to retrain and follow a long term passion for inner work. This interest was heightened after a student exchange trip to Australia when I was studying design at Manchester Met back in the early 90s. By chance I attended a 10 day Vipassana meditation retreat in the blue mountains outside Sydney and this had a profound effect on my understanding of myself and my relationship with the world around me that has continued to develop.

My training was Integrative (different models) and Transpersonal (your true self beyond what you have learned about yourself). I'm also keen on the Existential ideas because they put you and your sense of the world at the heart of things. What purpose and meaning do you make of? Or maybe you feel you have lost purpose and meaning and this is what causes you anxiety. Similarly, what does freedom mean to you or do you feel trapped and stuck in the circumstances of life? How can we find freedom and meaning in the face of limitation and difficulty?

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have worked with anxiety intensively over several decades as a result of dealing with and overcoming my own experiences. In my practice I work with generalised anxiety, social anxiety, insomnia, stress, worry, low self-esteem, work pressure, anxiety about the future, existential despair, aging and trauma. Anxiety, as I see it, is information that points us to the deeper difficulties that often result in feelings of powerlessness, vulnerability and withdrawal. In therapy we discuss your specific experiences of your life and together explore how best to understand what is going on and how to move forward. The aim of this is for you to feel more free and at ease within yourself, your life and relationships.
When your life feels very stuck, heavy and dark talking helps lighten the load. Sometimes my work around depression involves understanding feelings of lack and the loss of meaning and purpose. Also, how to enable new energy and motivation when life may feel flat, full of despair and hopelessness. It may take some time but I know it is possible to move on, feel better and recover your life and your self. Issues around depression that I work with include; - Low self-esteem - Procrastination - Suicidal ideation - Hopelessness and helplessness - Fear and anxiety - Challenging negative beliefs and thoughts - Healing the Inner-child - Creativity - Loss of meaning and purpose - Self-harm and self-hatred - Family genealogy - Feelings of lack - Self-worth - Past hurt and disappointment - Loneliness and isolation - Self-doubt
This may include couples work - both same sex, poly and heterosexual. Often my work explores relationships between family members, repeating patterns and roles that may have been taken on that no longer serve. I help you understand what your own blueprint of 'what love looks like' is, where this comes from and how aspects of it can keep you stuck in old patterns. I also explore abusive and neglectful relationships. It may also be a case of looking at loneliness and isolation as well as sex and sexuality. Much of my work with clients involves helping them to find new ways to communicate, which is particularly helpful for couples who are stuck in conflict but also for individuals who may struggle to assert themselves or ask for what they need.
Much of my work is with LGBTQ+ men and women. I also work with men and women who identify as heterosexual but have queer aspects of themselves that they struggle to understand or express. I identify as a gay man. Whilst LGBTQ+ issues are the same as anyone from the dominant culture we also face specific challenges around otherness. Clients often report feeling safe with me to open up and talk about issues that they might otherwise have to explain or educate a therapist about. Some of the areas I've worked with include; - Coming out later in life - Bullying and homophobia - Anxiety - Family rejection - Non-monogamy - Low self-esteem - Navigating sex - Betrayal - Partying and over doing it - Burn-out - Transitioning - Kink and fetish - Loneliness and isolation - Aging - Pride vs shame - Creativity
I am trained as a Transpersonal therapist, which I see it as offering us a perspective beyond your personal experiences and difficulties that helps you expand your understanding of your true nature and potential. I am interested in each person discovering for themselves what spirituality means for them and what works for them. I have found meditation and using the imagination as a great way to explore this along with creativity. I see life as a creative process.
