My work is based on a whole-person approach to psychotherapy that values the full spectrum of human experience, including the mind, body, feelings and the spiritual dimensions of life. Many of my clients come because they feel stuck, conflicted or disconnected, even when life appears manageable from the outside. This may be experienced as persistent low mood, anxiety, depression, grief, difficulties in relationships, or a sense of being unable to process painful experiences from the past. Some clients also come for therapy in the context of demanding professional roles, including work within charities and other public-facing organisations, and in some cases this work is funded by an employer.
In my work, I pay close attention to what is happening in the present moment of the therapeutic relationship, as this often reveals thoughts, emotions and relational patterns that are important to understand. At the same time, the work may involve exploring past experience, long-standing patterns, or the quieter movements of inner life that do not always show themselves immediately.
I offer in-person and online sessions from my practice at Acklam Hall in Middlesbrough.
Hello, I’m Michael Blades, an Integrative Relational Psychotherapist and full member of the UKCP. I have been practising since 2017 and have spent many years studying and working with the deeper aspects of human experience. My background includes integrative and relational training, along with extensive study in areas that explore the complexity of consciousness and inner life.
I work with adults from a wide range of backgrounds and have clinical experience within the NHS, charitable organisations, and educational settings. Alongside private practice, I also provide independent counselling and psychotherapy for staff and leaders working in demanding roles, funded by charities and organisations and held outside management or HR processes. This work is informed by an understanding of cumulative pressure, responsibility, and emotional load in professional contexts.
I also support trainee psychotherapists and counsellors, and have many years’ experience working with trainees from the beginning of training through to graduation.
I aim to offer a thoughtful and grounded therapeutic space where clients can explore themselves with honesty and at a pace that feels right for them.
