I used Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Psychodynamic Therapy as a Clinical Psychologist for a long time and have chosen to specialise in Systemic Psychotherapy so therapy can be tailored to suit client preferences and problems.
I work with adults – individuals, couples and families. I qualified first as a Clinical Psychologist in 1989 and later as a Systemic Psychotherapist. I was in the NHS for 30 years, leading services for adults and older adults (over 65s), and continue to offer supervision to NHS psychological therapy services. Over the decades as a therapist in a variety of adult psychological therapy services, I have worked with individuals experiencing a very wide range of difficulties.
I started my specialist training as a Systemic Psychotherapist in 2000. I chose to specialise in this approach after using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Psychodynamic Therapy as a Clinical Psychologist for a long time. The emphasis of systemic therapy on relationships and people’s strengths is central to its appeal to me and its flexibility allows me to draw on my training and experience in a range of therapy models. I am interested in how difficulties are linked to our relationships, work, and wider social and cultural experience. In therapy I explicitly draw on people’s resilience and resources to enable them to make changes.
Therapy is tailored to clients’ needs by offering a therapeutic approach which best suits the person and the issues for which they are seeking support. I have considerable experience of brief therapy from the NHS and also offer longer-term therapy - either when problems are more complex or when clients are seeking a more in-depth approach.
Regarding work with couples, as well as being as a systemic couple therapist, I have additional training in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) and Couple Therapy for Depression (a way of working with depression recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)).
I am an experienced and trained clinical supervisor and have a qualification in supervision of Couple Therapy for Depression. I am a Visiting Lecturer and Supervisor at Tavistock Relationships.
In addition to registration as a Systemic, Couple and Family Psychotherapist with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy, I am registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and am an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. I have published in academic journals throughout my career.
I meet clients in London Bridge and online.
