My Approach

As a person-centred counsellor I fully immerse myself in your world, and I commit to working with you, whatever struggles you face. I offer an open encounter where I help foster in you a greater sense of self-worth and agency. I practice a non-directive approach where I listen, helping you to hear your own needs and realise what changes you want to make. My work has supported those facing multiple struggles, notably: grief, depression, loneliness, infidelity, the processing of new diagnoses, anxiety, suicidal ideation, self-esteem struggles, relationship complexities, and control around alcohol, weight and compulsive behaviours.
I work anti-diagnostically, believing that these behaviours often make sense in the context of your life, but that together, the therapeutic relationship can help you develop an understanding about where these behaviours and thoughts originate, and how you might develop more helpful behaviours in the future.
Making time for yourself begins the process of self-care, and whatever tangled struggle you manage, I endeavour to be alongside you, no difficulty being too big or too small. Shame grows in the darkness, so together I will bring light and love, to help you move in the direction your authentic self seeks. I believe it is the relationship that heals

About Me

I am a 44 year old woman with over 700 hours of clinical practice within the charity sector, bereavement work and private practice; working relationally with a wide variety of struggles. I have a background in education, teaching secondary English literature and theatre and believe passionately in the rejuventaing potential of the arts for wellbeing. Where my philosophy is rooted in human potential for self growth and agency I believe much of psychological struggle lessens in a co-created relationship founded on the principles of empathy and deep positive regard.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Having historically struggled with aspects of this form of control, I have developed a very deep understanding of the function and significance of this complex relationship. My research expanded my therapeutic understanding of eating distress and my life experience makes me very comfortable and passionate about working with this.
Working relationally, I resonate with this heightened state of sensitivity in the world and feel anxiety can be conceptualised as the distance we are from our own intrinsic valuing and understanding. A quest to strengthen this connection to our own internal knowing is the work of the therapeutic relationship.
I worked for two years in a hospice therapy service. I find many of the bereavement models resonate with my person-centred philosophy and are supportive of moving through complex grief. I believe therapy to be an important space to support clients in a new understanding of life once an unalerable change has occured.
Over my training depression has been a recurrent theme for clients. Psychologically I believe that much of the maintence of this depressed access to positive expeirences and relationships is the externatisation of the illness from a medical model point of view. I work through a sense making lens where a depressed feeling makes sense for an individual and it is in the meaning making and relational trust that we begin to shine line on what is needed.
Having worked with clients who have faced their darkest moments I do not feel unsettled by clients who express their agency in seeking an end to their deep pain. Relationally I work to build the threads of connection and empathic understanding to help support meaning making and look to find the light of hope.
