My Approach

You may feel like your friends and colleagues are moving on with their lives, while you remain stuck. You know you want things to change, but you keep putting it off until tomorrow. Then you wake in the night, convinced that you’re wasting time; that life is passing you by.

The more time passes, the more you feel it’s your fault. You tell yourself it “should” be easy to make changes. You call yourself “lazy", or "not good enough". This self-critical way of thinking is exhausting. It saps your energy, making it even harder to take steps towards change. You feel worse than ever.

What’s more, you feel alone in this, reluctant to share how you’re feeling with family or friends who — with all good intentions — tell you to “just get on with it” or simply to “believe in yourself”. If only it were that easy!

Struggling to make changes is rarely to do with laziness, or not being up to it. In fact, people who feel stuck in this way are often highly competent in many areas of their lives. What gets in the way runs deeper. Perhaps, unconsciously, the stuckness is keeping you “safe” from taking risks. Or perhaps, growing up, you weren’t allowed to make certain choices. You may feel you’d be letting people down in some way if you chose to do things differently.

About Me

I work with adults who feel caught between the part of themselves that wants to make changes and the part that feels stuck. The changes they want to make are various: it could be moving jobs, making new friends, writing a novel, meeting a partner, joining a club, going to the gym, having tricky conversations… But the difficulty is the same: they’ve tried to take action on their own, perhaps multiple times, perhaps sometimes successfully, but they keep hitting a wall.

Therapy is a collaboration. Together, we’ll explore what stuckness is like for you. We’ll look at what gets in the way of you making changes, and we’ll clarify what you want for yourself and your life. How we achieve this in practice is individual to you. It often means a lot of talking(!), but we can also draw upon more creative methods, like working with your dreams.

This process can sometimes be quick, and sometimes be slow. I offer patience, curiosity, compassion and continuing support. I believe in respecting your particular pace of working, and in the power and relief of speaking the unspoken.

The goal is not necessarily to turn your life upside down (although it might be!). It’s to unstick the stuck, giving you freedom to make your own informed decisions about what you want for your life.

You’re very welcome to send me an email if you’d like to arrange a free 15 minute phone call to talk about what’s happening for you, and find out more about therapy with me. I look forward to hearing from you.
