My Approach

At one time or another, many of us can experience difficulties in life and feel less able to cope – such moments can be overwhelming, frightening and lonely especially if we are not able to share our innermost feelings and thoughts with family and friends. My approach is centred on the strong belief that each of us has the potential for self-discovery, self-acceptance and growth. My role, as your counsellor, is to support you in this process and to offer you a respectful and warm relationship based on kindness, openness and empathic understanding so that you feel accepted, valued and understood.
Our counselling sessions will be personalised depending on your needs so that we can work together to explore yourself, your emotions, your thoughts and whatever issue(s) you may bring: trauma, loss, anxiety, depression, low mood or just something that is niggling and somehow not yet understood. The process of self-discovery can then happen at a pace and depth to suit you.

About Me

Prior to qualifying as a therapist, I worked for many years in state education as a secondary school teacher. It was this experience of seeing young people in various states of emotional distress that prompted my decision to retrain at Metanoia as a person-centred counsellor. As well as my private practice, I have had experience of placements in the NHS and two local charities one of which, until recently, I continued to support as one of their trustees. Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety is debilitating, sometimes to the point of feeling overwhelming and unmanageable. Our work in counselling sessions is to understand where these feelings come from in the hope that they will diminish and that a more contented life feels achievable again.
I volunteered at a local bereavement charity for many years and worked with many clients. The bereavement process can be a particularly difficult time as clients deal with complex and often overwhelming feelings as they come to terms with the loss and, at the same time, attempt to move on with their lives. Sometimes clients do not know how to grieve and can feel stuck. Counselling sessions are a space to explore the complex feelings that grief brings up.
Depression can be all-consuming and impact every aspect of one's life. Counselling sessions can explore and understand each client's depression and through our work a client can aim to feel lighter again.
Our relationships are so key to who we are as human beings - parental, romantic, work, spouse, friendship, family - and when relationships get into difficulties this can cause hurt and confusion. Exploring these feelings and relationship dynamics can be healing and help us to move on.
I have supported a number of clients who have experienced trauma, often, but not exclusively, in childhood : abuse, bullying, domestic violence, bereavement, divorce, neglect.
