My Approach

As a transactional analyst my initial approach is to find out about you and the reason(s) for you seeking therapy.
Once this is clear for both of us we discuss your aims for the work and agree timing and frequency of our sessions.

In the process of our work I will help you access your own wisdom and resources in order for you to understand yourself more deeply and ultimately experience yourself, others and the world with greater ease.
We work together to agree your aims and from time to time we review our progress.
I see you weekly, with agreed breaks and some of that might be online under some circumstances as agreed by both of us.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety is often a debilitating body felt experience that is accompanied by distressing thoughts and compensating behaviour. I have worked extensively in this field both as a nursing and psychotherapeutic clinician. This does not always necessitate long term work as symptomatic relief can often be achieved after a few weeks or months.
Having worked as both an ICU nursing sister and now as a Psychotherapist I have a broad insight into bereavement and loss. Bereavement takes many different paths and I work with clients to help them process and live alongside loss. I focus on each client as an individual and each bereavement as a unique event. I do not focus on formulaic or predicted outcomes favouring a relational approach which accommodates whatever arises. Hence this work is not time limited.
Following an initial session and identification of the problems you want to address we plan a course of sessions to work towards your aims. Relationship work is often very different from what it anticipated which is why an initial session is so valuable. The work is collaborative and my initial aim is to help you talk openly while we uncover what are likely to be familiar patterns in which you are stuck. Relationships are co-created and it is therefore important that both parties are prepared to share the space equally. I anticipate seeing you weekly for 6 weeks after which we review the work and plan frequency going forward. I understand that commitment to regular sessions can be challenging; however I find it most effective to start with several sessions close together which allows us to make an effective start before spacing the meetings out.
As humans we are constantly moving in relationship with others. Transactional Analysis is a particularly useful and accessible approach to understanding our own patterns of relating and gaining insight into the differences we encounter within families, friendships, colleagues and others. Relationships are often the source of anxiety and unhappiness and work in this area can be liberating, empowering and life enhancing. It is usually work that helps us understand ourselves with compassion and recognise our qualities.
I work as a Relational supervisor with the therapist at the centre and focus of the work. I am particularly interested in working within the transferential process of psychotherapy and across modalities. I have a particular interest in body focussed work and somatisation. The focus of my clinical work is with adults, individuals and couples as well as supervising trainees and clinical therapists in private practice. My supervisory work extends into other areas with respect to each supervisee bringing their own areas of expertise into their practice.
