My Approach

My personal leaning and approach is predominantly informed by Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic thinking and theory. My Integrative training, however, was pluralistic and I don't adhere to just one school of thought but aim to work flexibly, responding to the individual needs of clients. I prioritise the providing of a safe, reliable, and thoughtful therapeutic space where clients can think together with me about present concerns as well as their hopes and fears. With all clients, I aim to listen sensitively and with compassion. As well as what the client brings, I am mindful of what may be less easy to think about and what might be communicated unconsciously.

I believe that change towards healthier self esteem and more enjoyable and satisfying relationships can happen organically through the therapeutic relationship. I conceptualise this as a kind of provision by the therapist of a mental space within which the client can explore their emotions and develop their reflective capacity thereby strengthening their own agency and resilience. I aim ultimately to help clients enhance and develop their own self care and self support systems so that they can help themselves improve their quality of life.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

In psychoanalytic thinking anxiety arises from internal and unconscious conflicts that are difficult to think about. Anxiety can manifest in difficulties in finding enjoyment in everyday life right through to phobias. Sometimes certain feelings can feel dangerous and might be repressed leading to anxiety. It's also important to remember that we live in anxious times and to be completely devoid of anxiety is also not desirable. As well as its protective aspects it can also be a spur to thinking, action and development.
There is often a very painful unmourned loss at the heart of depression. This isn't always and only about mourning the loss or absence of a loved one. Life is full of losses and some of them aid our development and growth if we can allow them to. Depression can manifest in feelings such as "I'm not good enough" as well as "I'm lonely", "I'm empty" and can sometimes even be a way of trying to hold onto a much loved person, event or time of Life. Through our conversations I would hope that you might find some relief through understanding how you may have come to feel depressed and that this would be part of processing difficult feelings in the service of feeling better.
I have extensive experience working with parents in support of their parenting and their children's development and is an alternative to working directly with the young person. I aim to provide a space for parent/s to think together with me about the possible meanings of their child's behaviour, what it might be bringing up in them, helping parents to look at the larger family and societal system that we are all operating within as well as thinking about the particular challenges (physical, psychological, emotional) for their child during the process of growing up.
Our relationships, or the lack of them, can cause us distress and confusion. Life begins in relation to our parents and maybe our siblings and throughout the Lifespan we are continuously 'reminded' of these first relationships as well as developing new ones. Sometimes therapy can be helpful for people wanting to have a better understanding of what they bring to relationship dynamics. This can in turn help people to understand others better, thereby improving their relationships.
