My Approach

As a systemic and family therapist my focus is on the influence of important relationships of all sorts both in the present and in the past. Systemic therapy looks at generational patterns of relating and behaving and how these may play a significant part in problems experienced in the present. I am interested in the stories of people's lives and in the question, 'what has happened to you?' Within this approach many of the 'problems of life' can be understood and resolved through changes in how we relate to others and to ourselves. I aim to keep things simple. I work collaboratively with my clients to navigate where they have come from and where they want to go to. I do this in a flexible, creative and adaptive way. No two stories are the same and as such I don't adopt a single way of working. I tailor my approach to the people who come to see me. I seek feedback and have adopted the philosophy 'do what works' in helping people to achieve their goals in therapy. I can offer both online and in person appointments

About Me

I am a married 52-year-old father and stepfather with a great deal of personal and professional experience which I bring to my work. 0riginally training and working as a social worker I moved into becoming a family therapist later in life. I have worked in specialist mental health services with children, young people and adults for over 25 years. I like to think I am a friendly, thoughtful, and down-to-earth person. For me the relationship between therapist and client is the most important factor in determining if the therapy will be successful. As such I spend time getting to know the people who come to see me in order to develop an in-depth shared understanding of their experience. I can work with any combination of individuals, couples, and families.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have significant experience in working with people who experience a dual diagnosis of mental health issues and substance misuse problems.
I enjoy working with couples and this has become a prominent aspect of my practice in recent years. I have a particular interest in therapy where depression is having a significant impact on a couple's relationship.
I am adept at working with complex relational difficulties within families. I can bring a wealth of both personal and professional experience in helping families to improve their capacity to communicate with each other and to resolve long standing negative patterns of interacting.
I have many years of experience working with a wide range of mental health issues. I have worked in specialist psychosis, personality disorder, and CAMH services. I have particular interests in emotion, attachment theory, mentalisation based approaches and in the open dialogue model of working with psychosis.
I am a father and stepfather to five children most of whom are now adults. I have also worked as a therapist and social worker in children's mental health services. This personal and professional experience helps me to relate to parents and to the struggles of parenting. I can work with parents with or without their child to support families with a wide range of issues.
