My Approach

I work with an integrative perspective incorporating body, mind and spirit, with a special interest in creative ways of working, including art, dreamwork and psychodrama. To explore additional ways of supporting body and mind to heal from trauma, I studied energy psychotherapy techniques to alleviate the physical and emotional symptoms experienced after trauma and I have a special interest in working with childhood trauma. I continue to study embodied approaches to psychotherapy.

About Me

Hello, my name is Helen and I am a qualified and experienced counsellor and psychotherapist. I offer short-term and long-term individual counselling and psychotherapy based in Maida Vale/Paddington, as well as offering online therapy via Zoom.

I work with individuals on a range of emotional and psychological issues. Perhaps a recent bereavement or relationship break up has left you struggling. Or the demands of life are leading to depression and anxiety which feel overwhelming. Talking about what you are finding difficult can help you to gain a new perspective, feel supported and come to terms with what you have experienced.

Drawing on my integrative training, I can use a range of tools and approaches to create the therapy that is best suited to you. I have been working one-to-one with clients since 2013 and I also worked for an NHS mental health team for almost 8 years. This means I have extensive experience of assessing and working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds and a range of difficulties.

Please do give me a call on 07779 710098 or send me an email at helenmstokes@gmail.com if you have any questions you would like to discuss. We can then arrange an initial meeting to see whether it feels right to work together. You are under no obligation after this initial meeting. If it seems that I am not the right therapist for you, I may be able to recommend another therapist or organisation that is more appropriate.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety is a natural response to feeling under any kind of threat and it's very common to feel anxious if you are going through stressful life events. For some people, anxiety can become something that affects how you are able to live and enjoy life. Perhaps you have very strong anxious feelings/symptoms, or anxieties that in some way seem out of proportion to the current situation. I have worked successfully with many clients who are experiencing high levels of anxiety, including working with OCD symptoms, intrusive thoughts and panic attacks.
Feeling depressed sometimes is part of being human, however, if low mood lasts for longer than a couple of weeks, it can really affect your quality of life. And for some people depression can slowly creep up and last for much longer. It can then feel very difficult to take that step of making contact with a therapist. If you contact me, I will support you to find ways to better manage your low mood, as well as encouraging you to identify and understand the potential causes of your depression.
Relationships are fundamental for us as humans and we need connection to others to support and maintain our emotional wellbeing. However, relationships can often be challenging, perhaps triggering difficult emotional or physical responses. Therapy offers the opportunity to experience relationship in a different way and to be curious about the feelings and thoughts that we experience and I encourage you to explore how you interact relationally through our work together.
I gained my qualification as a supervisor in 2022 with the London Centre for Psychodrama and I am a Recognised Supervisor. I welcome new supervisees to my practice.
We can experience anything as traumatic if we felt powerless within that situation and there was nothing we could do to prevent it from happening. Trauma can lead to us experiencing strong emotions and these might seem to appear randomly, even if we're feeling generally well most of the time. We might experience panic attacks, bad dreams, feel as if the traumatic situation is happening for us right now, or feel spaced out/dissociated. To successfully treat trauma, it is important to work with physical as well as emotional symptoms and I have trained in a range of helpful approaches, including energy psychotherapy.
