My Approach

As a person-centred psychotherapist I will support you to engage with what is important to and for you. This can often involve having time to focus on the present and look to the future whilst integrating important parts of your life to date. I work with a wide range of clients who may identify a number of different needs or troubles. So whilst some people approach therapy with one specific issue to explore it’s not unusual to feel there are different things to bring, and even that these may be inter-related.

The following highlights some specific areas I am experienced within:

* Personal and family experience of disability (including mental distress): My own work and life experience has resulted in a firm commitment to working with disabled people, and those in close relationships with people living with impairment or illness. I work with people both long and short term where disability or health related issues are an aspect of why therapy has a value to that individual. Please notify me of any access related support requirements that would produce accessible psychotherapy for you and I would strive to provide an appropriate service or signpost you if other therapists have specific relevant skills that I am unable to offer (e.g. BSL).

* Support for professionals addressing career relevant challenges: Clients can be seeking to focus on their own professional development, whilst wanting to be in touch with who they are as a whole person. If this is your focus I could be right for you if you are looking to improve you sense of purpose and presence in your professional space, or make changes in relation to (including seeking to return to) employment.

* Support for learners, researchers and those working in adult education: I have experience working with students and researchers as a counsellor and additionally have a track record as an academic working in Higher Education. I bring my knowledge of University spaces and processes to support students and staff accessing therapy to thrive (and not just survive) academic environments.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

How old (or young!) do you feel you are? I work with adults aged 18+ and strongly believe in no upper age limit for entering psychotherapy! Younger people, middle aged people and older people all can experience personal challenges that bring them to therapy. Many of us can experience the weight of expectations - from others or ourselves- about how we ‘should’ be and what we ‘ought to’ be doing at different ages. But the reality is we may either not be able to live our lives based on those expectations or we may want to choose not to. We may also find it interesting or even challenging to adjust to different stages of our lives.
When living with experience of disability, impairment or long standing health difficulties, psychotherapy can be an opportunity to identify challenges faced whether that be in relation to ableism (discrimination imposed on disabled people) or experience of the impairment/condition.
In families, relationships of care can often mean that individuals are seeking a balance between how to be there for other people and how to retain some space for themselves. Family life can be challenging and expressing who you are and what you need might be a particular concern. Others are concerned to manage their own wellbeing in the context of family life that has been harmful to them and psychotherapy may be helpful in supporting moving forwards to reduce the impact of those relationships and find more supportive environments. Whatever your circumstances psychotherapy provides an opportunity to explore relationships and consider your own needs for belonging and the giving and receiving of care
Managing long standing health concerns can be exhausting and even lonely - for example you may be living with pain, with managing medication or other treatments, and / or experiencing uncertainty if the condition is progressive or fluctuating. Managing engaging with health professionals and / or family and friends when living with health difficulties can also be useful to explore, especially if relationships feel ‘stuck’ or are changing in ways that are raising issues for you.
Mental health concerns are a primary reason why many people consider counselling or psychotherapy. Whether or not you have sought or received a diagnosis, psychotherapy provides space for you to explore, understand and respond to your mental distress.
