My Approach

I use gestalt therapy as my approach to counselling because of its focus on people’s potential for growth, healing and flourishing. Here are some examples of the types of situations I can help with:

Knowing yourself better/Connecting with yourself:

In our busy world which often places a lot of demands on our time and energy, it can be hard to feel a sense of connection with yourself. This can lead to a sense of loneliness, anxiety, separateness or a sense of just living ‘on the surface’. By exploring how to connect with the body, you can feel calmer, more grounded and more in touch with a sense of purpose and what you want. This can lead to a greater sense of belonging.

Relationships with partners or friends

While these are very distinct types of relationships, they both involve many types of intimacy, and it’s normal in any close relationship to experience challenges. Sometimes these challenges are significant and can leave us feeling alone and disconnected. Sometimes these challenges are caused by habitual ways of relating/communicating that don’t bring about the closeness that we desire. Gestalt therapy can help you to find a more grounded and authentic place to relate from and can support you to:

(a) Communicate openly your own needs and desires to connect
(b) Develop more intimacy by allowing people to know you well and getting to know others better
(c) Work out what feels satisfying and meaningful to you in relationships
(d) Feeling calmer and less anxious in relating to others.

Motherhood:

Being a mother can be wonderful and it can also be a lot more challenging than you might have expected. Every stage of motherhood can bring difficulty. Whether you are pregnant, have a newborn, toddler, teenager or an adult child (who may even have their own children), difficulties can arise in the relationship which can leave you feeling disconnected, lonely, frustrated, and a whole range of emotions. It may also bring up painful memories from your own childhood.

If you are experiencing these difficulties, gestalt therapy can help you to understand how or why they might be arising. It can also help you identify ways of doing things differently so you have the best chance of having a satisfying relationship with your child. Therapy can be a very nurturing process which offers resources and support for doing this.

Relationships with your parents:

Relationships with parents can be confusing: we can feel a mixture of love, care and also hurt, anger and resentment and many other things. There may be a lot of unrepaired hurts or disagreements. These experiences which may have happened in childhood, can impact us negatively as adults. Gestalt therapy can help you to find ways to deal with and heal these old wounds and be more engaged in creating the life you want now.

With time and regularity, change is really possible.

If you’re having problems with any of the above, get in touch today and we can arrange an intro session.

I believe we all the deserve the time and attention we need to grow, flourish and live a meaningful life.

I use gestalt therapy as my approach to counselling because of its focus on embodiment as well as people’s potential for growth, healing and flourishing. I’m particularly interested in research which shows developing self-acceptance and curiosity towards our habits or emotional patterns helps us to move through difficulties and develop new ones (Cozolino 2014: Siegel 2007). This certainly reflects my own experience of dealing with difficulties and finding new strengths and capacities I didn’t know I had.

I offer:
Gestalt therapy sessions (50mins per session, weekly commitment, long term and short term)
Gestalt therapy sessions integrating Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement work (70mins per session, weekly commitment, short term and long term)

About Me

I support people to overcome difficulties in relationships with themselves and others. Whether it is a relationship with your partner, child, parents, colleagues or yourself, it is normal to encounter difficulties. But it can be hard to know how to move through these difficulties. Gestalt therapy can help you become more confident in how to approach these whilst staying true to yourself.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

People can encounter the same themes or difficulties repeating in different ways throughout the life cycle. Sometimes this can be deeply frustrating. And, each time, it offers a new opportunity to learn something more and deepen your self-knowledge. Encountering grief and letting go and also gathering and integrating the rich discoveries you make throughout the life-cycle can be a deeply meaningful and enlivening process.
I offer an embodied approach to dealing with anxiety - exploring opportunities for the body to become a resource for feeling grounded and safe, while also uncovering and understanding the reasons behind the anxiety.
Whatever point you are at in the parenting journey, there can be many unexpected challenges and delights. I work with people at all stages of parenthood: those who are in the process of deciding whether or not to become a parent, those who are encountering the early days of parenthood all the way up to parents who have adult children and/or grandchildren.
