My Approach

My approach is grounded in Gestalt psychotherapy. I offer a warm, collaborative space where clients can explore their experiences and become more aware of their feelings, bodily responses and ways of relating to others. Together, we consider how familiar ways of coping may have supported them in the past and whether these still serve them.

My work is relational and trauma-informed, drawing on my Person-Centred background and incorporating somatic and parts-based perspectives where helpful. I work at each person’s pace, with attention to their culture, identity and social circumstances, supporting greater self-compassion, agency and choice.

About Me

I am a therapist with 15 years’ experience in counselling, including work in addiction and private practice. Originally trained in the Person-Centred approach, I have since completed my psychotherapy diploma training at the Gestalt Centre and am now a UKCP accreditated psychotherist.

My practice is grounded in Gestalt psychotherapy, with a relational, trauma-informed approach. I attend to clients’ emotional and embodied experience, exploring how earlier ways of coping influence present relationships, self-understanding and capacity for choice. My work is also informed by somatic and parts-based perspectives, with an emphasis on awareness, compassion and agency.

I work with concerns including anxiety, shame, addiction, relationship difficulties, identity and belonging. I am particularly interested in how personal experience is shaped by family, culture and wider social conditions, including racism, homophobia and exclusion. As a Black gay man of African heritage, I bring an awareness of intersecting identities while remaining curious about the distinct meanings these hold for each client.

Through my private practice, Bowlay.therapy, I seek to offer a collaborative therapeutic relationship in which clients can explore vulnerability, recognise their resources and develop more satisfying ways of relating to themselves and others. Regular supervision and ongoing professional development support my commitment to reflective and ethical practice.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have a particular interest in supporting people experiencing addiction, exploring its relationship with emotional pain, shame and ways of coping. My approach is compassionate and collaborative, supporting greater awareness, choice and sustainable recovery.
I support people experiencing difficulties such as anxiety, low mood, shame and emotional overwhelm. Together, we explore these experiences within the context of their lives and relationships, recognising existing strengths and developing more supportive ways of responding to themselves.
I am interested in how traumatic experiences can continue to affect the body, emotions and relationships. My trauma-informed approach emphasises safety, trust and working at the client’s pace, supporting awareness and a greater sense of agency without pressure to revisit distressing experiences before they feel ready.
I offer space to explore experiences of race, racism, cultural identity and belonging, including their impact on wellbeing and relationships. As a Black therapist of African heritage, I bring lived awareness while remaining attentive to each person’s distinct experience.
I provide an affirming space to explore sexuality, sexual identity, intimacy and relationships. I have a particular interest in LGBTQ+ experiences, including the effects of shame, discrimination and cultural expectations, supporting clients to develop self-acceptance and their own sense of belonging.
