My Approach

I am qualified as a Jungian Analytical Psychotherapist and as a Psychodynamic Counsellor. This means that I can offer a flexible approach to each person or couple who comes to see me, and we can decide upon a good way to work together.

About Me

Qualified for over 30 years, I work in private practice and members of the public come to me for help. I see couples and individuals. Practitioners in the counselling and psychotherapy profession also come for therapy or clinical supervision.

For help with major underlying changes, I offer intensive Jungian psychotherapy: two or three times a week for several years. My passion is to help people to become the person they really are. Alternatively I can offer a short-term focussed series of sessions which can be helpful for a specific problem or for 'unsticking' a 'stuck' situation. There are, of course, various positions between these two ends of the spectrum so if you are not sure what is right for you, then this is something we can work out together.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety is endemic in our age and is one of the most common presenting problems in my practice. Sometimes people know what is causing their anxiety such as particularly stressful circumstances; other times there seem to be no identifiable reasons and this can cause further distress. Slowing down during therapy, with time to examine anxiety in a safely contained space can be immensely helpful.
Bereavement changes everything. Talking about the loss of a loved person enables adjustments to take place in due course. This entails deep suffering, and therapy can clear the path for mourning by supporting this natural process.
Depression is a common problem in my practice and one that I take seriously. It is a normal part of life which is why it is so widespread and may be a way of breaking down old psychic structures in order to make new connections. It is common when loss and major change occur. We may use CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), which focuses on thoughts and feelings, to generate strategies in order to cope and manage everyday life. However many people want more than this. Understanding how depression has come about and what it means, which will be different for each person, can bring great relief. Skilled in doing this in a secure relationship, I provide a safe and supportive way forward.
Problems such as getting over an affair; managing the changes that come with new babies and children; sexual difficulties or incompatibilities; arguing; children leaving home; a work-life balance that is out of order are common difficulties that I have experience in helping with. Often, one partner takes the initiative in seeking help but if partners want to see me together then both need to be willing to engage with the experience. Once change is underway, it gathers its own momentum and is very satisfying.
Most stressful situations are caused by change and lack of control. Stress is an inevitable part of life and we need good coping mechanisms in order to manage it well. Left unrecognised, stress can get converted into all sorts of symptoms, both physical and emotional, and people can resort to unhelpful coping strategies like alcohol, drugs, food... which can make the situation worse.
