I understand counselling and psychotherapy as a process that helps us to make sense of experiences or events that have happened to us.
Sometimes something may happen that throws us off balance, does not make sense, causes us great stress and anxiety. Psychotherapy is a way of looking at those unsettling events you experienced, help you to get a different perspective and make sense of them. I tend to think of the aim of psychotherapy as a process of illumination and understanding rather than change, the latter being an inevitable juggernaut moving unavoidably along, the former helping us cushioning, adapting and transforming to ever-changing us and the world.
I work short-term as well as long-term open ended depending on what you feel is right for you. I believe that it is you who knows best what you need. Sometimes, however, particularly when very stressful events have happened, you may not feel able to access this knowledge as nothing makes sense anymore and this is when therapy can help find alternative viewpoints and gain insight into your own values and beliefs.
I am an UKCP registered existential-phenomenological psychotherapist working in the public sector and in private practice. Coming originally from a background in science I worked for several years in research and was awarded a doctorate in natural sciences (PhD level equivalent) before retraining as a psychotherapist over 25 years ago. Apart from working in private practice I have worked in the NHS and for over two decades with a large HIV and sexual health charity. I also worked as an associate lecturer at Regent's University and am Co-founder and Director of Gay Men's Therapy, a counselling and psychotherapy service for gay and queer men as well as men attracted to men.
Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.
