My Approach

Systemic, narrative and ecologically inspired approahes

About Me

I work independently, in central Somerset, providing a systemic psychotherapy service to individuals, couples and families experiencing relational and personal identity challenges, wishing to consider new possibilities. I work face-to-face whenever possible. I also offer co-work with a highly experienced female colleague - an EMDR trained clinical psychologist - when appropriate, enabling broader perspectives to be explored in depth.
My background includes three decades of delivering a family therapy service and training within CAMHS settings. I have developed valued specialisms in the field of post-adoption work, multiple trauma as a consequence of adverse childhood experiences, adolescent identity formation, couples-focused presentations, adult sibling and issues unique to ageing.
I welcome self-referrals and receive enquiries from a range of third parties.
I offer systemic supervision to students and colleagues.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Throughout life, all of us experiences cycles of location, dislocation and relocation. Some of us have smoother journeys than others. I believe that smoother, slower travel makes journeys ultimately more rewarding. Getting this right for children is crucial, and, as a society a huge price is paid for dysregulated behaviour. Therefore, I believe that by working among families where there have been disruptions, whatever they may be is of great importance. Adoptive parents and foster-carers carers deserve good quality services for the benefit of the children they look after and I| am privileged to work within this community.
As we age, sometimes it makes it more possible to re-view aspects of our lives that haunt us. Some of us carry huge burdens of guilt about some of the forays we have made. Guilt traps us and hems us in; acknowledging annd owning our errors can be a prelude to taking responsibility and expressing remorse. I take pride in working with adults and older adults who seek to operate differently as the years advance.
Every coupling is unique, dynamic and either succeeds in adjusting to change or it withers 'on the vine' as inevitable new challenges emerge. For close-couple relationships to run smoothly, stock needs to be taken. An external consultant with experience and sensitivity can facilitate this very private process if the couple themselves become stuck in the mire of miscommunication.
Families, are what each of us are born into. Family members join us, they have much meaning for us and when they disappear or behave in ways that distress us we can experience a range of feelings. All my professional and personal experiences tell me that it is preferable to 'think family' at all times, even if the issue that is being struggled with appears to rest with one family member. I have developed expertise in connecting with families / family systems whether working with individuals, couples or family groups. Every family I see struggles with a unique range of issues and I am wiling to consider working with any combination of presenting problems...
When we experience adverse life events, we become fearful and we can react in many different ways. Trauma ruptures our sense of who we are, making us vulnerable in many different ways: our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual resources and needs are all different. Understanding the complexity of trauma helps the healing process, helps us move from vulnerable victim to proud survivor and I believe that all the knowledge and experience I offer are resources to share to enable core strength to be rediscovered and built upon.
