My Approach

I trained as a Gestalt psychotherapist. It gave me a solid foundation, a relational approach that I have developed over the years, especially with mentalization theory.

Our problems aren't easily put into boxes like anxiety, depression, relationship problems, loss, trauma, abuse, shame and so on. We and life are more messy. My endeavour is to try to see your experience of the world and hold that big picture in mind and find a focus with you, something you would like to work on in the time that we have.

About Me

I am an accredited psychotherapist and supervisor in the UK, with 28 years of experience, some in private practice but mostly many years of working in a counselling team at a university. I think I have seen a lot of life. I have travelled from London to Bangkok by car. Driven across China. Worked in Brunei and Thailand. I've worked as a dustman, woodworker, landscape gardener, bookseller, then chartered surveyor, part trained as speech and language therapist and then psychotherapist. It's given me many ways to see the world and to connect to others.

I am very active. I like cycling, running and being outside with my dog. I love reading and nature. I am based in South Manchester and will be developing my practice to incorporate 'walking therapy' if you are interested in that.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety comes in many different forms, the most common being phobias. To a certain level and frequency, anxiety is a normal experience helping us to navigate our lives and direct us away from danger or perhaps towards a meaningful life. But there comes a point when anxiety tips us into feelings that spoil and limit our lives. Like with a lot of difficult feelings they are often better faced and explored with someone else in a trusting relationship which is where psychotherapy can be helpful.
Relationships are so significant in our lives because we are social creatures. When things go wrong here, when our needs are not met, we usually suffer. It is extremely difficult for us as human beings to be isolated. Psychotherapy can be really helpful in gaining insight into how we relate to other people and as an experience in itself. In the therapy we can talk abstractly about relationships but there's a huge value in using the therapeutic relationship as way to explore and experiment with ourselves in real time. Discovering mentalization theory in the middle of my career has proven to be a game changer.
I like the definition of trauma described by Peter Fonagy who said that it is not so much the particular event such as a car accident or an attack, that defines whether something is traumatic or not, rather it is the experience AND the situation of being alone with overwhelming feelings and thoughts in isolation that determines trauma. Again it is the therapeutic relationship that can help heal that experience so that the person can shelve, so to speak, that experience and move on with their lives.
