My Approach

Creativity is how we heal and grow. We never stop being creative. No matter what life has thrown at us, all our ways of surviving and thriving are a creative way of solving problems, even if they don't work perfectly or for very long. Because I work with creative practices, influecned by my long experience in theatre, I am confident that all of our problems can be looked at as creative challenges. We can grow - in awareness, in self respect and depth of experience - even as we confront these problems and find new ways of looking at them and growing beyond them.

About Me

I am a Gestalt based art therapist with thirty years of experience in creative practice. I link creativity, imagination, and awareness to physical experiences such as breath, tension and relaxation and creative ways of connecting body and mind. I work from home or in a studio space in the East End of London.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety is a painful expression of life energy. It disturbs what should be pleasant or restful experiences and can inhibit our growth. If it can be held in deeper awareness, however, it can reveal many of our most important truths. Anxiety can be befriended as the powerful energy it holds, it can be released and transformed into excitement and even delight. It can be opened up like a gift.
I am bi-cultural, having grown up and between several cultures, and while I understand how rich this experience has been, it has also given rise to probelms and dilemmas. People with multiple or different cultura backgrounds can feel misunderstood and even groundless, or too grounded, confined to a narrow register of identity by the way they are perceived and received. Howver if we develop our own agency, our culture(s) can be our richest resource, an amazing playground for transformation and growth.
Depression can take many forms - from a sudden and acute experience, driven by a traumatic event, to a background issue - a chronic experience, forming our sense of ourselves in the world. Whatever the diagnosis, it's up to the person who experiences it to come to terms with their feelings, deepening their awareness of what meanings they hold, what messages they provide for their lives and their way forward. Depression can give rise to profoundly creative ways of being.
We spend the majority of our lives working, and so does everyone else. If we have problems at work, they can become overwhelming. If we are unemployed, our feelings of being different can be very painful and we can wonder what our purpose is. Seeing ourselves as creative actors, co-creating our lives in relationship with others, our sense of "employment' can become expanded. We can look more deeply at the issues that come up at work and off work, and develop creative agency to change, shift, move, move on and grow.
Our identities are co-created with our world, so we don't have as much control over them as we would sometimes wish to have. We feel judged, pigeon-holed, othered, marginalized... configured by other peoples' ways of seeing, interacting with and even using us. Becauase our identities are complex and socially intertwined, they required deep and sensitive exploration to find out where we can get hold of our own agency and work creatively to empower our choices and extricate ourselves from entaglement.
