My approach is relational and psychodynamic. I am curious about people’s minds and inner worlds and I understand that past experiences and relationships can have significant effects on people’s current lives. I take a view that there may be underlying causes for distress, pain and suffering.
I work collaboratively with my clients to explore their difficulties. This exploration only happens in the context of a trusting therapeutic relationship. My warm, empathic and gentle approach helps clients to feel at ease and creates safety in the work.
I offer face to face therapy, usually on a weekly basis. Initially I meet clients for a few introductory sessions so I can hear about their difficulties and we can think together about what would be most helpful. and discuss how psychotherapy works.
I offer short, medium, and long-term psychotherapy. This enables you to have a space for as long as it remains beneficial.
Please have a look at my website www.thedownspsychotherapy.co.uk for more information.
I am trained as both a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist.
I have over 20 years experience working in the NHS, where I am employed as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Medical Psychotherapy and in medical education.
In my private practice I specialise in individual psychodynamic psychotherapy and Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT). I am UKCP registered and I am on the BPC kite marked register.
Additionally I have significant training and experience in delivering supervision, and in providing Mentalisation Based Treatment (MBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Narrative Therapy.
My practice is located in Bristol. The psychotherapy room has been designed to be welcoming, calm and emotionally containing. It has been specifically created for my private practice and has a discreet side entrance.
There is plenty of free roadside parking nearby. The area is well connected by the main bus routes.
