About

AFSP, (Association for Family and Systemic Psychotherapy), is a registered charity and professional membership organisation, working to benefit the public by promoting and supporting family therapy and systemic services and high standards of professional trainings and practice.

AFSP does not run Family and Systemic Training courses but does accredit professional provider-led training courses They also support practice standards, promote research, host conferences, webinars and workshops, and provide information and resources for students, professionals and the public.

Membership is open to anyone from the UK or overseas interested in the field, developing their skills, and gaining understanding of effective family-inclusive practice, at whatever stage in their career, including family and systemic psychotherapists.

AFSP supports members who are qualified family and systemic psychotherapists, with application to the UKCP register.

The training route for Family and Systemic Psychotherapy is a four-year master’s level programme split into three stages – Foundation (year1), Intermediate (year 2) and Qualifying (years 3&4).

Only after successful completion of the full masters training is someone awarded the professional qualification in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy. This provides eligibility, to apply via AFSP (or IFT) to professionally register with UKCP.

Entry Requirements:
Training is designed on the basis that entrants have completed training in a health and social care profession and hold a Prior Professional Qualification e.g. Psychiatry, Clinical Psychology, social worker, mental health nurse etc.

Applicants without a relevant PPQ may apply via a training provider’s Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning route to demonstrate prior knowledge.
