Responding to the Care Quality Commission’s State of Care 2025/26 report, Jon Levett, UKCP chief executive officer, said:
'The findings in the report are deeply concerning. They highlight growing pressure on mental health services and the impact on people’s wellbeing.
'More than two thirds of community mental health survey respondents who waited more than six months said their mental health worsened while waiting. Demand is growing, yet people are already struggling to access the support they need.
'The picture for children and young people is particularly worrying. In March 2026, half of those still waiting for their first contact with mental health services had been waiting almost a year or longer.
'People need timely, compassionate care that meets their individual needs. We welcome the expansion of community mental health services, but it must be backed by funding and investment in the workforce to meet growing needs, while protecting existing services.
‘Qualified psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors must be part of multidisciplinary teams. People should have a choice of therapies, including longer-term psychotherapy where appropriate, particularly for those with complex needs.'
