Partnership of Counselling and Psychotherapy Bodies (PCPB)

The Partnership of Counselling and Psychotherapy Bodies (PCPB) is a collaboration of six leading professional bodies in counselling and psychotherapy. All PCPB organisations hold Professional Standards Authority (PSA) accredited registers. Together, the partnership represents around 75,000 counsellors and psychotherapists across the UK.

UKCP is a founding and active partner in the PCPB. We work alongside the:

  • Association of Christians in Counselling and Linked Professions (ACC)
  • British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
  • British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC)
  • Human Givens Institute (HGI)
  • National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS)

This partnership enables UKCP to collaborate strategically with peer organisations while continuing to represent the distinctive value of psychotherapy within the wider counselling and psychotherapy landscape.

History of PCPB

The PCPB began as the SCoPEd partnership, a collaborative initiative established to develop a shared standards framework. The Scope of Practice and Education for Counselling and Psychotherapy (SCoPEd) framework was developed. It sets the core training, practice and competency requirements for counsellors and psychotherapists working with adults. As the partnership evolved, it formalised into the PCPB, providing UKCP with an important forum to:

  • contribute to shared professional standards while maintaining the integrity and diversity of psychotherapeutic traditions
  • engage collectively with government, commissioners and regulators
  • improve public trust and understanding of counselling and psychotherapy
  • support long-term thinking about the future of the professions of counselling and psychotherapy.

Shared priorities and current areas of work

Across the partnership, the PCPB has agreed on a set of strategic aims, including:

  • continuing to develop the SCoPEd framework, ensuring its recognition and application as a standard for professional practice
  • strengthening the identity of the partnership and embedding it within the profession by promoting public understanding and trust
  • using data to enhance understanding of the profession’s demographic makeup and improve inclusivity and representation.

The current collaborative work that supports these aims includes:

This collaborative work supports UKCP’s own strategic objectives and enhances our ability to influence the wider system in the interests of both practitioners and clients.
