Working with children
I am an Integrative Child &Adolescent Psychotherapist, and have a prior training as a Play Therapist. I facilitate the child/young person in finding their own solutions to whatever is causing distress, using the therapeutic relationship itself to bring insight and change to ways of being, to bring increased inner calmness and clarity, and to develop self-esteem and confidence. I am a respectful and facilitating companion for the individual on their unique journey of self-discovery and healing, helping them to move towards fulfilling their potential as a human being, to whatever degree this is possible for them at the time.
In addition to exploration through talking, I also offer the use of creative approaches, and mindfulness and visualisation should these be desirable and appropriate, and also play for young children. The child/young person is involved in deciding which way to work, and I follow their lead in this.
I can help with a wide range of difficulties, such as anxiety, obsessive behaviours, depression, and the effects of trauma and /or domestic violence, or indeed when it may not be clear what lies at the root of the difficulties but the child/young person is struggling and is unhappy. I have also become especially interested in how sense of self, attachment patterns, and ways of managing stress and emotions are connected with disordered eating.
I have worked with children, young people, and some parents and adults, in a variety of settings-in mainstream primary and secondary schools, both state and independent, in MLD and EBD schools, for a bereavement network, in a women's refuge, in a private therapy practice for adults with body image and eating concerns, and in adolescent inpatient units for adolescents with severe eating disorders, as well as in private practice, and recently in the NHS.
