My Approach

I’m an online and Suffolk-based psychotherapist, with an emphasis on what it means for us to exist in the World.

Find out more at: www.philipknott.com

My aim throughout therapy is to help you voice your struggles and better make sense of them. Within this, my approach is one of trust, collaboration, engagement and non-judgement in a relaxed, supportive yet active atmosphere.

Working in this way offers you the opportunity to clarify experiences, tell your story, gain insight and reflect on your situation. Your courage and willingness to be open and honest will be an important part of the work. You will open out a better understanding of yourself, your power to choose, your limitations and possibilities.

What I am describing here is my take on some of the ideas of existential psychotherapy, which provides the broad foundation for my practice.

Existential psychotherapy and counselling are characterised by the exploration through talking of how a person lives their life, considering the meaning they give to their experience and what they do and don’t value. In this way, what is implicit in us is made explicit; and the client better learns to take a more active role in their own life through making more informed choices.

I am LGBTQIA+ friendly. I am friendly to all.

I have recently worked in the NHS for two years within Guy’s & St Thomas’ Cancer Care services. Prior to that I worked in the charitable third sector with a broad range of psychotherapeutic clients.

Alongside my psychotherapy practice, I am a practising solicitor and have an up-to-date understanding of modern professional life. I can draw upon my experience there when it is helpful for us.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

We all experience anxiety, no matter what the cultural rules we are told as we grow-up. It is often liberating to realise that anxiety is a human characteristic and from there to come into new relationship with our experience.
I have particular experience in bereavement and loss work, including co-facilitating a bereavement group.
I worked in the NHS for two years within Guy’s & St Thomas’ Cancer Care services. Cancer work can be delicate and it is important to find a pace that is right for you, whilst you confront your situation.
I specialise in online therapy. Working in the virtual world is different to psychotherapy in physical space. I bring experience and skill so that, I believe, it offers just as much; and - for some - more. We can find what works best for us by regulalry making sure that you are getting what you need.
Perhaps everything has a strong element of relationships in it. I bring considerable experience in relating to partners, families, others, our environment and life itself. I work particulalry well in this area.
